The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead is an American post-apocalyptic drama that premiered on AMC on October 31, 2010, and ended on November 20, 2022. Developed for television by Frank Darabont, it adapts the comic series created by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard. The story begins when Georgia sheriff’s deputy Rick Grimes awakens from a coma to find civilization devastated by reanimated corpses, commonly called walkers. Rick travels to Atlanta, reunites with his wife Lori and son Carl, and becomes a central leader among survivors seeking shelter, supplies, and a future in a world where death itself has become dangerous daily. Across eleven seasons, the series shifts its setting from the Atlanta survivor camp and the Greene family farm to the prison, Woodbury, Terminus, Alexandria, the Hilltop, the Kingdom, and the Commonwealth. Its conflicts are not limited to walkers: communities repeatedly confront armed human factions. David Morrissey played the Governor, ruler of Woodbury; Jeffrey Dean Morgan portrayed Negan, the baseball-bat-wielding leader of the Saviors; and Samantha Morton played Alpha, head of the Whisperers, who disguise themselves in walker skin. Among its most recognizable characters were Norman Reedus’s Daryl Dixon, Melissa McBride’s Carol Peletier, Danai Gurira’s Michonne, and Steven Yeun’s Glenn Rhee. Rick Grimes, played by Andrew Lincoln, remained the protagonist until Lincoln departed during season nine; the character was taken away by a helicopter group identified as the CRM in later franchise material. Michonne left the main series in season ten, though Gurira returned for its final episode. The final season centers on the Commonwealth, a large settlement whose apparent order masks class divisions and political coercion under Governor Pamela Milton, played by Laila Robins. Long-running characters such as Maggie Rhee, portrayed by Lauren Cohan, and Negan must cooperate despite Negan’s murder of Maggie’s husband Glenn with Lucille, his barbed-wire-covered baseball bat. The Walking Dead became a prominent AMC drama and generated several programs. Fear the Walking Dead premiered in 2015, while The Walking Dead: World Beyond ran for two seasons beginning in 2020. After the original series ended, AMC launched Dead City, starring Cohan and Morgan as Maggie and Negan; Daryl Dixon, centered on Reedus’s character in France; and The Ones Who Live, reuniting Lincoln and Gurira as Rick and Michonne. The original program received awards recognition, including an American Film Institute television-program honor and numerous Saturn Awards. Greg Nicotero’s makeup-effects work was important to its walker designs and practical gore.
