The Boys

The Boys is an American satirical superhero television series developed by Eric Kripke for Amazon Prime Video. It adapts the comic book of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, published by WildStorm and later Dynamite Entertainment. The series premiered on July 26, 2019, with its first season released at once on Prime Video. Its premise imagines a United States where costumed “Supes” are celebrities, corporate assets, and political commodities, rather than uncomplicated public servants. The most powerful team, the Seven, is managed by Vought International, a company that turns superheroism into branding and profit worldwide. The narrative begins when Hughie Campbell, played by Jack Quaid, sees A-Train kill his girlfriend, Robin, during a high-speed run. Billy Butcher, portrayed by Karl Urban, recruits Hughie into a vigilante group also called the Boys, which targets corrupt Supes and Vought. Their opponents include Antony Starr’s Homelander, the Seven’s patriotic-looking leader whose public image conceals cruelty and insecurity. Erin Moriarty plays Annie January, better known as Starlight, a sincere new Seven recruit who gradually learns how Vought exploits her. The cast also includes Jessie T. Usher as A-Train, Chace Crawford as the Deep, Tomer Capone as Frenchie, Karen Fukuhara as Kimiko, and Laz Alonso as Mother’s Milk. A key revelation is that Vought created Compound V, a substance that gives people superhuman abilities, rather than superheroes being naturally born. The company uses Compound V to manufacture heroes and protect its business interests. Giancarlo Esposito plays Vought executive Stan Edgar, while Elisabeth Shue portrayed Madelyn Stillwell in the first season. Later seasons introduce Aya Cash as Stormfront, a Supe whose Nazi past becomes central to season two, and Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy, a former Vought hero connected to Butcher’s family history. Claudia Doumit plays Victoria Neuman, a congresswoman with a concealed, lethal power. Colby Minifie plays Ashley Barrett, Vought’s increasingly pressured public-relations executive. The show’s fourth season premiered on June 13, 2024, and its finale arrived on July 18. In June 2024, Amazon announced that the already ordered fifth season would be the series’ final season. Kripke has also served as an executive producer and showrunner. The franchise expanded through the animated anthology The Boys Presents: Diabolical, released in 2022, and the live-action college-set spinoff Gen V, which debuted in 2023. Gen V follows students at Godolkin University, a Vought-operated school for young Supes, and includes characters from parent series.
