Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is a Japanese television anime adapted from the manga written by Kanehito Yamada and illustrated by Tsukasa Abe. Madhouse produced its first season, which aired in Japan on Nippon Television’s Friday Anime Night programming block from September 29, 2023, to March 22, 2024. The season contains 28 episodes. Keiichirō Saitō directed the series, Tomohiro Suzuki handled series composition, Reiko Nagasawa designed the characters, and Evan Call composed the music. Its opening themes were “Yūsha” by Yoasobi and, later, “Haruka” by Yorushika. Crunchyroll streamed the show internationally. Muse Communication also licensed the series in parts of Asia.

The story begins after the Demon King has already been defeated. Frieren, an elven mage, once traveled with the human hero Himmel, the dwarven warrior Eisen, and the priest Heiter during their ten-year quest. Because elves live extraordinarily long lives, Frieren initially fails to understand how quickly her human companions age and die. After Himmel’s funeral, she regrets not knowing him better. She therefore sets out on another journey, accompanied first by Heiter’s adopted human apprentice, Fern, to learn about people, memory, and the emotional weight of brief lives. Her destination is Aureole, a northern land associated with souls there.

On the road, Frieren and Fern recruit Stark, a young warrior trained by Eisen. Their route takes them through villages, ruins, and territories shaped by the former war against demons. The anime’s early episodes juxtapose present-day encounters with flashbacks to the original party, gradually revealing Himmel’s kindness and the significance of small actions Frieren once overlooked. Later, the group reaches the Northern Plateau and enters the First Class Mage Examination. This arc introduces mages including Denken, Übel, Wirbel, and the veteran Serie, while testing candidates in dangerous team-based trials. The exam’s proctor, Genau, announces its stages and rules to applicants.

The manga began serialization in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shōnen Sunday in April 2020. It received the 2021 Manga Taishō award and the 2021 New Creator Prize of the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. The anime’s premiere was presented as a two-hour special containing its first four episodes. At the 2024 Crunchyroll Anime Awards, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End won Anime of the Year, while its production was also recognized in categories including best director, background art, and fantasy. A second television season was announced after the first season concluded. The announcement was made in September 2024, on the anime’s first anniversary broadcast event.
