Toshiyuki Kubooka

Toshiyuki Kubooka is a Japanese animator, character designer, and director whose credits span television animation, original video animation, and theatrical films. His career is notably associated with adaptations that translate established games, manga, and light novels into distinct animated projects. As a character designer, he contributed to Yasuhiro Imagawa’s Giant Robo The Animation, the 1992–1998 OVA series inspired by Mitsuteru Yokoyama’s Giant Robo manga. The production reworked Yokoyama’s characters and concepts into a large-scale alternate-world story centered on Daisaku Kusama and the colossal robot Giant Robo.

Kubooka later directed the three-part Berserk: The Golden Age Arc film series at Studio 4°C. Its installments—The Egg of the King, The Battle for Doldrey, and The Advent—were released from 2012 through 2013. They adapt the Golden Age material from Kentaro Miura’s Berserk, following Guts after he joins Griffith’s mercenary Band of the Hawk. The films cover the band’s military rise, the campaign at Doldrey, and the catastrophe known as the Eclipse. Kubooka’s trilogy was a major feature-film version of Berserk before the later television adaptation produced by a different staff.

For A-1 Pictures, Kubooka directed the 2011 television anime The Idolmaster. Based on Bandai Namco’s idol-production game series, it follows the performers of 765 Production as they pursue work in singing, acting, and television. He returned to direct The Idolmaster Movie: Kagayaki no Mukougawa e!, released in 2014. The film reunites the television series’ 765 Production idols and places their group concert plans alongside the arrival of trainee members. This continuation made Kubooka a central director of the franchise’s early A-1 Pictures animated continuity.

Kubooka also directed Harukana Receive, C2C’s 2018 television adaptation of Nyoijizai’s manga. Set in Okinawa, it focuses on Haruka Ozora and Kanata Higa, a pair who take up beach volleyball. Their story includes Kanata’s renewed participation in a sport she had previously left behind.

In 2020, he directed C2C’s Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina. Adapted from Jougi Shiraishi’s light novels, illustrated by Azure, the series follows Elaina, a young witch who travels through different countries. Its episodic journeys bring her into contact with each place’s inhabitants and problems, rather than confining the narrative to a single kingdom. Kubooka’s direction on this project followed his work on idol drama, dark fantasy, and sports animation, demonstrating a body of credits across markedly different source genres. These named credits identify his role not simply as an animator, but as director and designer.
