Mike Flanagan is an American filmmaker known for adapting literary horror into stories about grief, family, faith, and memory. Born in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1978, he spent part of his childhood in Bowie, Maryland. Salem’s history later informed his interest in horror, though his films are not simply retellings of local legends. He studied electronic media and film at Towson University, graduating in 2002.
Flanagan wrote, directed, edited, and photographed his early feature, *Absentia* (2011), a supernatural story about two sisters confronting the disappearance of one sister’s husband and the possibility that something lives in a tunnel near their home. The film was made on a modest budget and gained a wider audience after appearing on Netflix. His next feature, *Oculus* (2013), expanded a short film he had made years earlier. It follows siblings trying to establish that an antique mirror caused the deaths and breakdowns in their family. The film’s shifting presentation of past and present became a recognizable part of his approach to horror.
His adaptation of Stephen King’s *Gerald’s Game* (2017) brought a largely interior novel to the screen. After her husband dies while she is handcuffed to a bed in a remote house, Jessie must face physical danger and traumatic memories. Flanagan also directed *Doctor Sleep* (2019), based on King’s sequel to *The Shining*. The film follows the adult Danny Torrance, now struggling with alcoholism, as he encounters Abra, a girl with powerful psychic abilities, and a group that hunts people with similar gifts.
Flanagan’s television work has been especially prominent. *The Haunting of Hill House* (2018), which he created for Netflix, uses Shirley Jackson’s novel as a foundation for a story about the Crain family, moving between the siblings’ childhood in a haunted house and their adult lives. Its ensemble includes Carla Gugino, Henry Thomas, Elizabeth Reaser, Kate Siegel, and Victoria Pedretti. Rather than adapting the novel scene by scene, the series builds a family drama around haunting, bereavement, and inherited pain.
He followed it with *The Haunting of Bly Manor* (2020), inspired by Henry James’s *The Turn of the Screw* and other works, and *Midnight Mass* (2021), an original series set on an isolated island community. *Midnight Mass* centers on the arrival of a charismatic young priest and the extraordinary changes that follow, while giving substantial attention to belief and addiction. His later Netflix series include *The Midnight Club* (2022) and *The Fall of the House of Usher* (2023), the latter drawing on stories by Edgar Allan Poe. Across film and television, Flanagan has repeatedly returned to horror as a way to examine what people remember, fear, and carry within their families.
