Miguel O'Hara

Miguel O'Hara is the character of Marvel's Spider-Man 2099, a future comic series launched in 1992. Writer Peter David and artist Rick Leonardi created him for Marvel's 2099 line. He first appeared in a preview in The Amazing Spider-Man 365 and then headlined Spider-Man 2099 number 1. Unlike Peter Parker, Miguel starts as a geneticist working in the city of Nueva York. His employer is Alchemax, the powerful company tied to his father, Tyler Stone. After Miguel attempts to abandon an addictive drug called Rapture, Stone sabotages his exit by making him dependent on it. Seeking a cure, Miguel uses an experimental procedure intended to imprint a person's genetic code. A subordinate, Aaron Delgato, corrupts the process with spider DNA. Miguel survives the resulting transformation and gains abilities that differ from Parker's. Miguel possesses enhanced strength, speed, agility, and vision, but his wall climbing comes from talons on his fingers and toes. He also has fangs, venom, and organic webbing produced from spinnerets in his forearms. His blue and red costume is initially a Day of the Dead style garment bought for a celebration rather than a superhero uniform. The skull motif became inseparable from the character's visual identity. Miguel is aided by Lyla, a holographic assistant whose artificial intelligence functions as a confidante and source of information. His private life is complicated by his relationship with Dana D'Angelo, his brother Gabriel, and the revelation that Tyler Stone is his biological father. The early series also establishes that Miguel's mother, Conchata, concealed this parentage from him. David used Miguel's first person narration to give the title a different voice from Peter Parker's. Miguel is often sarcastic, angry, and resistant to the responsibility imposed on him, yet he acts against Alchemax and other threats in 2099. The series ultimately links him to Marvel's present through time travel. In the 2010s, Miguel became a recurring figure in contemporary Spider-Man stories, including Superior Spider-Man and a relaunched Spider-Man 2099. A audience encountered version in the animated films Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse. Oscar Isaac voices Miguel in those films. That incarnation leads the Spider Society and treats disruptions to canon events as a threat to the multiverse, a position that places him in conflict with Miles Morales. His film portrayal is not identical to the comic character, whose origin and supporting cast come from David and Leonardi's 1992 series.
