Kang Full

Kang Full is the pen name of Kang Do-young, a South Korean cartoonist and webtoon creator born on December 7, 1974. He became closely associated with the early rise of Korean webtoons through work published on Daum’s online portal, where his long vertical-scroll comics reached a large online readership. His pen name, written 강풀, is commonly romanized “Kang Full,” although it is not an English description of his professional identity.

His early Daum serial Love Story (2002) helped establish his reputation for emotional, everyday drama. Rather than centering famous heroes, it follows ordinary people and intersecting relationships, a tendency that continued in later series. His webtoon Pure Love Comics was adapted into the 2008 film Hello, Schoolgirl, directed by Ryu Jang-ha and starring Yoo Ji-tae and Lee Yeon-hee.

Kang also made suspense and horror a major part of his output. Apartment, serialized in 2004, concerns residents of an apartment complex who die in a disturbing pattern; it became the 2006 film Apartment, directed by Ahn Byeong-ki. Timing, a supernatural thriller involving characters whose abilities relate to time, was serialized after Apartment and belongs to the narrative universe later called the “Kang Full Universe.” Its characters and concepts connect with other works including Again and Moving.

Moving is among his best-known series. The webtoon follows people with extraordinary abilities and, crucially, their children, while mixing school life, family history, espionage, and action. Disney+ released a live-action Korean adaptation in 2023. Kang wrote the adaptation’s screenplay himself, an unusual degree of creator involvement for a webtoon adaptation. The series starred Ryu Seung-ryong, Han Hyo-joo, Zo In-sung, Lee Jung-ha, Go Youn-jung, and Kim Do-hoon.

Another politically charged work, 26 Years, imagines people whose lives were damaged by the 1980 Gwangju Democratization Movement seeking revenge on the former president they hold responsible. The webtoon was adapted as the 2012 film 26 Years, directed by Cho Geun-hyun. Kang’s 2007 series Fool centers on a man who returns to his hometown and reconnects with a woman he loved; it was adapted for television as The Fool in 2009.

In 2024, Disney+ released Light Shop, a drama adapted from Kang’s webtoon of the same name. Set around a mysterious shop selling lights, it was directed by actor Kim Hee-won. Across romance, horror, political drama, and fantasy, Kang Full’s documented career is distinguished by stories that have repeatedly moved from online serialization into Korean film and television industries alike.
