Jozu is a senior member of the Whitebeard Pirates in Eiichiro Oda's One Piece. He holds the position of commander of the crew's Third Division, serving under Edward Newgate, the captain better known as Whitebeard. Jozu is one of Whitebeard's major officers, alongside commanders including Marco and Vista. He is distinguished by his immense build, blond hair, square jaw, and the diamond motif associated with his fighting power. That power is the Kira Kira no Mi, a Devil Fruit that lets him turn parts or all of his body into diamond. In diamond form, he can use his extraordinary hardness. During the Marineford war, Jozu demonstrates why Whitebeard trusts him with a command. When Dracule Mihawk sends a colossal flying slash toward Whitebeard, Jozu steps in and absorbs the attack with his diamond body. Jozu then tears up and hurls an enormous iceberg at the Marine forces, forcing Admiral Kuzan, also called Aokiji, to respond. Kuzan freezes the iceberg before it can cause the destruction Jozu intends. Later, Jozu attacks Kuzan directly and sends the admiral flying. Their encounter changes when Jozu is distracted after Marco is injured; Kuzan freezes Jozu, leaving the commander defeated and badly encased in ice. Jozu's connection with Whitebeard predates the Marineford conflict by decades within the story's chronology. In the flashback centered on Kozuki Oden, he appears as a younger Whitebeard Pirate when the crew reaches Wano. He is present during the period in which Oden joins Whitebeard's ship and travels with the crew. This material identifies Jozu not as a Marineford only fighter, but as an established participant in Whitebeard's earlier voyages. His loyalty is shown in action rather than speeches: at Marineford he protects his captain from Mihawk, attacks an admiral, and remains on the battlefield during the attempt to rescue Ace. The Kira Kira no Mi is classified as a Paramecia Devil Fruit. Its transformation is central to Jozu's named identity: his epithet is Diamond Jozu. Rather than producing diamonds as a separate material, he converts himself, which explains both the blocked Mihawk attack and his ability to ram enemies with his shoulder. At Marineford, however, the fruit's resilience does not save him after Kuzan catches him distracted by Marco's injury and freezes the commander into immobility. This defeat follows Jozu's earlier strike, which sends Kuzan flying during the battle to rescue Ace at Marineford and displays the threat he poses.
