Isabel Teixeira is a Brazilian actress whose portrayal of Maria Bruaca in the 2022 television drama *Pantanal* brought her widespread recognition. She is the daughter of singer-songwriter Renato Teixeira, known for songs including “Romaria.” Before *Pantanal*, she had built a career in theater as an actress, playwright and director. The television role introduced her work to a much larger audience.
*Pantanal* was a new version of the 1990 serial created by Benedito Ruy Barbosa and first broadcast by Rede Manchete. Bruno Luperi, Barbosa’s grandson, adapted the story for TV Globo’s 2022 production. Teixeira played Maria, the wife of the rancher Tenório, portrayed by Murilo Benício. At the start of the story, Maria lives under his domineering control and endures his contempt. “Bruaca,” the name by which she becomes known, is an insult, not a surname.
Maria’s life changes when she learns that Tenório has another family in São Paulo. The discovery forces into the open a deception that has shaped her marriage, and Maria begins to resist the role he expects her to occupy. Her relationship with Alcides, a ranch hand played by Juliano Cazarré, becomes central to that change. It also places both characters in danger as Tenório grows increasingly vindictive. Maria’s bond with her daughter Guta, played by Julia Dalavia, gives the story another perspective on the household: Guta sees her mother’s treatment and challenges the authority Tenório assumes over them.
Teixeira’s performance made Maria’s transformation one of the remake’s most discussed storylines. The change was not simply a move from submission to defiance. Maria had to reckon with years of humiliation, her concern for Guta and the consequences of pursuing a life beyond Tenório’s control. Those conflicts gave Teixeira a character whose choices altered the course of the drama rather than merely reacting to its central families.
After *Pantanal*, Teixeira appeared in TV Globo’s *Elas por Elas*, which premiered in 2023. She played Helena in the new version of the 1982 telenovela originally written by Cassiano Gabus Mendes. The part offered a contrast with Maria: Helena is a wealthy, controlling figure whose relationships are shaped by jealousy and attempts to hold on to power. Together, the two television roles showed different sides of Teixeira’s work to viewers who may not have known her theater career. Her casting in successive remakes also placed her in a distinctive part of Brazilian television history, reinterpreting characters and stories from earlier decades for contemporary audiences.
