Esther McGregor is a British actress and musician whose best-known screen role is Tegan Quin in *High School*, the television adaptation of Tegan and Sara Quin’s memoir. She is the daughter of actor Ewan McGregor and production designer Eve Mavrakis. Her work in the series places her in a story rooted in the real experiences of the Canadian musicians, rather than in a fictional account of a typical high-school romance.
Released on Amazon Freevee in October 2022, *High School* follows teenage twins Tegan and Sara as they grow up in Calgary in the 1990s and begin finding their way toward music. McGregor plays Tegan, while Railey Gilliland plays Sara. The two actors portray sisters who are close in age but have distinct temperaments and ambitions. Cobie Smulders and Kyle Bornheimer play their parents, Simone and Patrick. Tegan and Sara served as executive producers, and filmmaker Clea DuVall developed the series and directed episodes. The show draws on the sisters’ memoir, published in 2019, but dramatizes their adolescence rather than presenting a documentary record.
McGregor’s role required her to portray a real person at a formative stage, before Tegan and Sara became an internationally known musical duo. The series connects the twins’ changing relationship, their early interest in music and the ordinary pressures of teenage life. Its period setting includes details of the 1990s, while the central events are shaped by the memoir’s account of the sisters’ upbringing. McGregor’s performance is therefore part of a larger adaptation in which the actors represent people whose later lives and music are already familiar to many viewers.
Her casting is a notable point in her early acting career because it brought her into a production with the memoir’s subjects directly involved behind the scenes. The show also gave her a role in an ensemble that included teenagers and established performers, with the story moving between the twins’ home life and their experiences at school. Rather than portraying a celebrity in adulthood, she played Tegan as a teenager, when the sisters were still discovering how music might fit into their lives.
McGregor is one of Ewan McGregor and Eve Mavrakis’s children. Although her family connection is a readily verifiable part of her biography, her role in *High School* is the clearest specific example of her work as an actor. It links her name to a particular adaptation, character and period in the lives of Tegan and Sara, and provides a concrete basis for describing her professional screen career.
