Alex Cox is a British filmmaker whose work moves between punk comedy, historical satire and low-budget independent cinema. His first feature, *Repo Man* (1984), follows Otto, played by Emilio Estevez, into the Los Angeles car-repossession trade. Harry Dean Stanton plays Bud, the veteran who teaches him the job. A Chevrolet Malibu with a dangerous, glowing cargo drives the film’s science-fiction plot, while its soundtrack draws heavily on American punk.

Cox followed it with *Sid and Nancy* (1986), about Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen. Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb play the couple. Rather than tracing the whole history of the band, the film concentrates on their destructive relationship and its aftermath. The next year, Cox directed *Straight to Hell*, a deliberately unruly western featuring musicians including Joe Strummer, as well as Courtney Love.

His 1987 film *Walker* takes its title from William Walker, the American adventurer who seized power in Nicaragua in the nineteenth century. Ed Harris plays Walker. Cox interrupts the period setting with conspicuously modern objects and imagery, connecting the historical invasion to more recent United States involvement in Central America. The film’s political approach and anachronisms make it distinct from a conventional historical drama.

From 1988 to 1994, Cox also presented *Moviedrome* on BBC Two. His introductions brought viewers to cult films, genre pictures and less familiar international work, often explaining their production histories and the ideas behind them. That role made his enthusiasm for films outside the mainstream visible beyond his own directing career.

Cox continued to make films across countries and genres. *Highway Patrolman*, also known as *El patrullero*, follows a newly trained police officer working in Mexico. *Death and the Compass* draws on a short story by Jorge Luis Borges. In *Three Businessmen*, Cox and Miguel Sandoval play travellers whose search for a meal becomes an increasingly strange journey. His *Revengers Tragedy* adapts the Jacobean revenge play for a futuristic setting, with Christopher Eccleston in the lead role.

Later projects include *Searchers 2.0*, in which two former child actors travel toward Monument Valley to confront a screenwriter from their past, and *Tombstone Rashomon*, which revisits the gunfight at the O.K. Corral through competing accounts. Cox has also written about filmmaking: *X Films: True Confessions of a Radical Filmmaker* recounts his experiences in the industry, while *10,000 Ways to Die* examines the spaghetti western. Together, those books document interests that run throughout his films: genre, political history and the practical struggle to make independent work.
