Forgetting Sarah Marshall is a 2008 romantic comedy directed by Nicholas Stoller in his feature directorial debut and written by its star, Jason Segel. Segel plays Peter Bretter, a Los Angeles musician who composes the score for a television crime drama starring his girlfriend, Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell). The film opens with Sarah ending their five-year relationship while Peter is naked in his apartment. Unable to move past the breakup, Peter travels alone to Hawaii, only to discover that Sarah is staying at the same resort with her new boyfriend, British rock singer Aldous Snow (Russell Brand).
The uncomfortable coincidence drives the film's central comedy: Peter repeatedly encounters the couple while trying to recover from being dumped. Rachel Jansen (Mila Kunis), a receptionist at the resort, offers Peter a room and gradually becomes his friend and romantic interest. Their outings around Oahu contrast with awkward meals and conversations involving Sarah and Aldous. Paul Rudd appears as Chuck, a laid-back surfing instructor who calls himself Kunu. Jonah Hill plays Matthew, a resort employee fascinated by Aldous and his band, Infant Sorrow. Bill Hader plays Brian, Peter's stepbrother, who urges him to stop dwelling on Sarah.
Peter also carries an unusual creative ambition: a musical featuring Dracula puppets. Sarah had discouraged the project, but Rachel encourages him to pursue it. Back in Los Angeles, Peter stages the show with help from Brian and other friends. Its combination of elaborate puppetry and songs about Dracula's loneliness gives the ending a distinctive payoff tied to Peter's own heartbreak. The movie avoids making Sarah simply a villain: her dissatisfaction with Peter's passivity emerges during a candid conversation at the resort. Meanwhile, Aldous and Sarah find that their relationship has problems of its own.
Judd Apatow produced the film, which was released by Universal Pictures in April 2008. Stoller and Segel later collaborated on The Muppets, which Segel cowrote and starred in. Brand returned as Aldous Snow in the 2010 comedy Get Him to the Greek, also directed by Stoller; Hill appeared there as a different character. Forgetting Sarah Marshall was shot largely in Hawaii, and its island setting is integral to Peter's attempts to escape familiar routines. The film's most memorable contrast is between Peter's stalled professional life and the passionate puppet musical he finally completes. By the final scene, his connection with Rachel grows from shared experiences rather than another attempt to impress Sarah.
