Released in 2024 and directed by Shawn Levy, Deadpool & Wolverine is Marvel Studios' first R-rated feature, retaining Deadpool's adult tone. At the beginning, Wade has left active mercenary work behind and is selling used cars when the Time Variance Authority takes him into custody. Matthew Macfadyen plays Mr. Paradox, a TVA official who says Wade's home reality is threatened after the death of its Wolverine. Wade rejects Paradox's proposed solution and searches other realities for a Wolverine who might help. He finds a defeated variant, played again by Jackman, whose past failures make him reluctant to join Deadpool's mission. Their journey leads to the Void, a desolate dumping ground at the end of time guarded by Alioth, the cloudlike creature previously seen in Loki. There they confront Cassandra Nova, played by Emma Corrin. The film identifies Cassandra as the twin sister of Charles Xavier and gives her telepathic and telekinetic powers. Cassandra controls a settlement in the Void and becomes the central antagonist to Deadpool and Wolverine. The story also reunites Wade with Vanessa, portrayed by Morena Baccarin, and features familiar supporting characters from the earlier Deadpool films, including Leslie Uggams's Blind Al, Karan Soni's Dopinder, Brianna Hildebrand's Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Stefan Kapicic's Colossus, and Rob Delaney's Peter. It also brings back Aaron Stanford as Pyro from the Fox X-Men films and introduces several surprise appearances by characters associated with that earlier screen universe. The screenplay is credited to Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Zeb Wells, and Shawn Levy. Rob Simonsen composed the score, while George Cottle served as second-unit director and action coordinator. Deadpool & Wolverine opened in the United States on July 26, 2024, after a world premiere in New York City on July 22. It became the first R-rated film released by Marvel Studios and marked Jackman's return to Wolverine following Logan, which had been released in 2017. The production deliberately keeps Logan's ending intact: Deadpool initially digs up the grave, but the narrative establishes that the Wolverine he recruits is a different multiversal version. Reynolds and Jackman had already shared the screen in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the 2009 film that Deadpool repeatedly mocks. By pairing its title characters, Deadpool & Wolverine combines Reynolds's comic persona with Jackman's long-running X-Men role, which began in 2000's X-Men and spanned multiple Fox productions. The film's plot and casting are built around that crossover, not merely a standard sequel arrangement.
