Edit reference

Maomao is the protagonist of *The Apothecary Diaries*, a Japanese mystery series written by Natsu Hyuuga and illustrated in its light novel edition by Touko Shino. Its story unfolds in an empire modeled on historical China, especially within the restricted women’s quarters of the imperial palace. Before arriving there, Maomao lives in a pleasure district and learns medicine from her adoptive father, the apothecary Luomen. Kidnappers sell her into palace service, where she initially intends to finish her term quietly. Her sharp observational skills and practical knowledge of drugs, poisons, and illnesses make that anonymity difficult.

When she hears that the emperor’s infant children are mysteriously falling ill, Maomao recognizes that poisonous face powder is the likely cause. She leaves an anonymous warning; although one child survives, another dies. Jinshi, an influential palace official, traces the warning to her after realizing that she can read and write. He brings her into the household of Consort Gyokuyou as a food taster. That post gives Maomao access to courtly intrigues but also puts her close to potential poisoners. Her investigations repeatedly combine medical reasoning with attention to servants, etiquette, and palace politics.

Maomao’s distinctive relationship with poisons goes beyond professional expertise: she experiments on herself, testing substances and building tolerance to some toxins. She treats medical puzzles with enthusiasm that can unsettle the people around her. Jinshi increasingly relies on her deductions and takes a personal interest in her, while she generally focuses on solving problems rather than reciprocating his flirtation. Her connections to the pleasure district also matter to the plot: the military strategist Lakan is her biological father, and the courtesan Fengxian is her mother. Those revelations link palace mysteries to Maomao’s own family history.

The character originated in Hyuuga’s web novel, which began publication on Shosetsuka ni Naro in 2011, before appearing in light novels and manga adaptations. In the Japanese television anime, which premiered in 2023, Aoi Yuki voices Maomao; Emi Lo voices her in the English dub. Her work as Gyokuyou’s taster is not simply a pretext for isolated riddles: the hazards of cosmetics, childbirth, and court rank shape the cases she encounters. She is neither a ruler nor a conventional warrior. Instead, her influence comes from noticing evidence that powerful people overlook and from applying the knowledge she acquired outside the palace to dangers inside it. Her curiosity repeatedly challenges the boundaries imposed on palace servants.
