Avatar: The Legend of Korra is an animated sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender, created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko for Nickelodeon. It premiered on April 14, 2012, and follows Korra, the next Avatar after Aang. Unlike Aang, she begins with mastery of water, earth, and fire, but must learn airbending from Aang's son, Tenzin. The story is set seventy years after the original series, chiefly in Republic City, a metropolis founded by Aang and Fire Lord Zuko as a home for people from every nation. Korra's journey therefore combines spiritual responsibility with the pressures of life.
The first season, Book One: Air, centers on Amon, the masked leader of the Equalists, who promises to remove bending from society. His campaign exposes resentment toward benders and forces Korra to confront political violence rather than a single imperial enemy. She joins a pro-bending team, the Fire Ferrets, with brothers Mako and Bolin, while developing a friendship with Asami Sato, an inventor and daughter of industrialist Hiroshi Sato. The season also establishes Republic City's pro-bending arena, metalbending police, and Tenzin's family, including his children Jinora, Ikki, and Meelo. These details make the sequel's conflicts social, technological, and personal too.
Book Two: Spirits moves the action to the Southern Water Tribe and introduces Unalaq, Korra's uncle and chief of the Northern Water Tribe. Unalaq urges her to open the Spirit World, but his plan is to merge with Vaatu, the spirit of darkness, during Harmonic Convergence. The season's flashbacks reveal the first Avatar, Wan, who lived ten thousand years earlier and gained bending connections through the lion turtles. Book Three: Change follows the return of airbending after Harmonic Convergence. Zaheer, an anarchist who can airbend, leads the Red Lotus and seeks to eliminate world leaders, making him a dangerous opponent.
Book Four: Balance depicts Korra recovering from the trauma inflicted by Zaheer three years earlier while Kuvira builds an Earth Empire. Kuvira's campaign to reunify the Earth Kingdom becomes authoritarian, and her superweapon is powered by a spirit-vine cannon. The finale brings Korra to Republic City, where she confronts Kuvira and chooses empathy over execution. The series ended on December 19, 2014, after four books and fifty-two episodes. It notably confirmed Korra and Asami's romantic relationship in the finale, a milestone for children's television. The creators continued the story in Dark Horse Comics, including Turf Wars and Ruins of the Empire.
