Loki

Loki is a Marvel Studios television series created by Michael Waldron for Disney+. It premiered on June 9, 2021, with Tom Hiddleston returning as Loki, the Asgardian trickster introduced in Thor and developed across the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The story begins immediately after the 2012 version of Loki escapes with the Tesseract during the time heist in Avengers: Endgame. Instead of continuing his original fate, this Loki is arrested by the Time Variance Authority, a bureaucratic organization that monitors the Sacred Timeline. Agent Mobius M. Mobius, played by Owen Wilson, recruits him to investigate a dangerous time variant called Sylvie.

The variant is Sylvie, portrayed by Sophia Di Martino, who has spent years evading the TVA after being taken from her timeline as a child. Season one combines procedural investigation with cosmic fantasy: Loki and Mobius follow disasters across history during 2050 apocalypse, while trying to understand who controls time. Their pursuit leads to Lamentis-1 in 2077, where Loki and Sylvie become stranded during a moon’s destruction and accidentally create a branch the TVA cannot ignore. The season exposes the Time-Keepers as figures and reveals that the TVA’s employees are variants whose memories were erased.

At the end of season one, Loki and Sylvie reach the Citadel at the End of Time and meet He Who Remains, played by Jonathan Majors. He explains that he ended a multiversal war by forcing realities onto one timeline. Sylvie rejects his bargain, sends Loki back to the TVA, and kills him, causing countless branches to spread. Season two, released on October 6, 2023, follows Loki as he “time-slips” between past and present. With Mobius, Hunter B-15, and Ouroboros, played by Ke Huy Quan, he tries to stabilize the Temporal Loom while investigating the TVA’s origins and Renslayer’s ambitions.

The series changes Loki from a self-serving antagonist into a character confronting responsibility, friendship, and the consequences of choice. Hiddleston’s performance remains tied to the films but gives this alternate Loki room to experience grief, affection, and sacrifice. The show expands the MCU’s treatment of time, branching realities, and identity through contrasts between sterile TVA offices, retrofuturist technology, and apocalyptic landscapes. Its supporting cast includes Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Judge Ravonna Renslayer, Wunmi Mosaku as Hunter B-15, Tara Strong as Miss Minutes, and Eugene Cordero as Casey, later known as Hunter K-5E. Loki concludes with its hero choosing stewardship over power.
