Calvin Harris

Calvin Harris, born Adam Richard Wiles in Dumfries, Scotland, on 17 January 1984, became one of the defining producers of twenty-first-century electronic pop. Before international recognition, he uploaded homemade songs to the internet and released the singles “Da Bongos” and “Brighter Days” in 2002 under the name Stouffer. His breakthrough came with the 2007 album I Created Disco, whose bright, synth-driven singles “Acceptable in the 80s” and “The Girls” introduced his witty electro-pop style to the British mainstream.

Harris expanded his sound on Ready for the Weekend, released in 2009. The album included “I’m Not Alone,” a UK number-one single whose dramatic vocal hook and expansive production helped establish him as a major dance artist. He also wrote and produced “Flashback” and the title track, demonstrating a growing interest in combining club structures with pop songwriting.

His commercial reach widened sharply with 18 Months (2012). The album produced a record-setting eight UK top-ten singles, including “Bounce” with Kelis, “Feel So Close,” “Sweet Nothing” featuring Florence Welch, “I Need Your Love” with Ellie Goulding, and “Thinking About You.” “We Found Love,” his collaboration with Rihanna, became a global number-one hit and earned a Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video. “Summer,” released in 2014, became another international hit and topped charts in several countries.

Harris’s 2015 album Motion continued his partnership-based approach. It featured “Outside” with Ellie Goulding, “Open Wide” with Big Sean, and “Pray to God” with Haim. In 2016, he released “This Is What You Came For,” again with Rihanna. The track became a worldwide success, while its songwriting credit later drew public attention because Nils Sjöberg, the pseudonym used by Taylor Swift, was listed among the writers.

His fifth studio album, Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1, arrived in 2017 and shifted toward a polished, funk-influenced sound. It included “Slide” with Frank Ocean and Migos, “Feels” featuring Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry, and Big Sean, and “Promises” with Sam Smith. Harris followed it with Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2 in 2022, featuring artists including Dua Lipa, Young Thug, 21 Savage, and Justin Timberlake. Across his catalog, his signature lies in translating dance-floor rhythms into concise, highly memorable pop records while using different vocalists to change each song’s emotional color.
