Witch Watch

Witch Watch is a Japanese television anime adapted from Kenta Shinohara’s manga of the same name, serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump since February 2021. The television version began broadcasting on April 6, 2025, on Japan’s MBS/TBS network, after being announced as a two-consecutive-cour production. Bibury Animation Studios produces the series; Hiroshi Ikehata directs, Deko Akao handles series composition, Haruko Iizuka designs the characters, and Yukari Hashimoto composes the music. Its central pairing is Nico Wakatsuki, a young witch who has completed six years of magical training, and Morihito Otogi, her exceptionally strong childhood friend. Morihito belongs to a line of ogres and is appointed Nico’s familiar, a role that makes him responsible for protecting her. Nico’s mother has foreseen that Nico will face disaster within a year, so Morihito moves into the Wakatsuki home and the two begin living together. Nico openly hopes their reunion may become romantic, whereas Morihito treats guarding her as a serious obligation. Rather than presenting magic as a distant fantasy system, Witch Watch repeatedly makes Nico’s spells the engine of its everyday comedy. Her well-intended magic can solve a problem in an unforeseen way, leaving Morihito to contain the consequences. The household grows beyond its initial two-person arrangement with classmates and supernatural companions, including Kanshi Kazamatsuri, a tengu familiar who uses wind powers; Keigo Magami, whose troublesome alter ego Wolf emerges under particular conditions; and Nemu Miyano, a witch associated with cat magic. Their overlapping school life, protection duties, and paranormal incidents give the show its episodic rhythm. Shinohara was already known for Sket Dance and Astra Lost in Space, and Witch Watch carries forward his interest in school-based ensembles while combining it with witchcraft and familiar folklore. The anime’s announced cast includes Rina Kawaguchi as Nico and Ryōta Suzuki as Morihito. Kōhei Amasaki plays Kanshi, Kaito Ishikawa plays Keigo, and Tomori Kusunoki plays Nemu. YOASOBI performs the opening theme “Watch me!” For viewers, the premise is therefore not simply a romance between magical teenagers: it is a comedy built around a witch whose exuberant improvisation collides with an ogre familiar’s caution, while a prophecy supplies a continuing reason for the characters to stay close. The source manga remains ongoing, with Shueisha collecting its chapters in tankōbon volumes; the anime brought that serial story to international streaming audiences outside Japan in 2025, while preserving its mix of school comedy and supernatural danger for new television viewers.
