“Squid Game: The Challenge” is a reality competition series inspired by the South Korean drama “Squid Game,” but its contestants compete for a cash prize rather than fight for survival. The first season brought 456 real players together at a purpose-built set in the United Kingdom. They faced challenges drawn from the drama, alongside new games designed for the competition. The prize was $4.56 million, billed as the largest single cash award in reality television history.
Netflix released the ten-episode first season in November and December 2023. The opening game, “Red Light, Green Light,” recreated the drama’s stop-and-go contest with a large animatronic doll and motion sensors. Players who moved after the signal were eliminated, though here elimination meant leaving the game, not death. Other recognizable challenges included Dalgona, in which contestants carefully cut shapes from honeycomb candy, and the glass bridge, where players chose between panels that could hold their weight or give way.
The series also introduced social and strategic contests beyond the original show’s games. Players formed alliances, made decisions that affected other contestants, and faced tests of trust and cooperation. One early contest asked players to choose a number; the person whose number was selected was eliminated. These moments made negotiation and group behavior central to the format, not just physical skill.
The final contest narrowed the field to three players: Mai Whelan, Sam Lantz, and Phill Cain. In the final episode, they played a version of rock-paper-scissors, and Mai won the $4.56 million prize. Whelan, a Vietnamese American immigration adjudicator and former U.S. Navy veteran, became the season’s winner.
The show’s production attracted attention as well as viewers. Contestants later raised concerns about the cold conditions and injuries during filming, particularly during the long “Red Light, Green Light” challenge. Netflix and the production companies disputed claims that contestants had suffered serious harm, while acknowledging that some players received medical attention. The debate highlighted the practical difficulties of turning a fictional elimination game into a large-scale competition.
A second season was announced by Netflix in December 2023, with casting opened to applicants around the world. The series therefore extended the “Squid Game” franchise into unscripted television, using its familiar symbols and high-stakes premise while making the outcome depend on real contestants’ choices, alliances, and performance.
