My Name

My Name is a South Korean crime thriller series released by Netflix on October 15, 2021. Directed by Kim Jin-min and written by Kim Ba-da, the eight-episode drama stars Han So-hee as Yoon Ji-woo, a young woman whose life is transformed after the murder of her father, Yoon Dong-hoon. The series begins on Ji-woo’s seventeenth birthday, when she is isolated by classmates because of her father’s criminal reputation. That night, Dong-hoon is shot outside their apartment while Ji-woo listens helplessly from inside. Determined to identify the killer, Ji-woo turns to Choi Mu-jin, played by Park Hee-soon, the influential leader of the Dongcheon crime organization. Mu-jin had been Dong-hoon’s close friend and presents himself as Ji-woo’s protector. He trains her in brutal hand-to-hand combat and gives her a new identity, Oh Hye-jin. Under Mu-jin’s direction, Ji-woo enters the police force as an undercover operative, assigned to the Narcotics Unit, where she can search for information about her father’s death. At the police station, Ji-woo works with detective Jeon Pil-do, portrayed by Ahn Bo-hyun. Pil-do initially distrusts the new recruit, who is unusually skilled, secretive, and willing to use violence. Their uneasy partnership gradually develops as they investigate Dongcheon’s drug trafficking network. Kim Sang-ho plays Cha Gi-ho, the Narcotics Unit chief whose relentless pursuit of Mu-jin places him at odds with both organized crime and members of his own force. The drama’s central conflict depends on Ji-woo’s divided loyalties. She believes Mu-jin is helping her avenge Dong-hoon, yet she must conceal her connection to Dongcheon from Pil-do and Cha. As the investigation progresses, her assumptions about her father’s identity, his relationship with Mu-jin, and the circumstances of his death are repeatedly challenged. The series uses its compact episode count to focus on revenge, deception, grief, and the personal cost of living under a false name. My Name marked a major action-oriented role for Han So-hee, who had previously gained wide recognition through the romance drama The World of the Married. Her performance required extensive fight choreography, particularly in scenes showing Ji-woo’s training and confrontations with gang members. The show also features Lee Hak-joo as Jung Tae-ju, Mu-jin’s loyal enforcer, and Chang Ryul as Kang Soo-yeon, a police officer connected to the Narcotics Unit. Rather than presenting revenge as simple empowerment, My Name follows Ji-woo as violence narrows her choices and exposes the danger of trusting people who claim to know the truth.
