Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic

Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic is a Japanese television anime adapted from Shinobu Ohtaka’s manga of the same name. Produced by A-1 Pictures, its first season aired in Japan from October 7, 2012, to March 31, 2013, for 25 episodes. Koji Masunari directed the series, which was broadcast through the MBS/TBS network group. The adaptation introduces the world’s “Dungeons,” dangerous tower-like ruins containing treasure and Djinn. Conquering a Dungeon can grant a person a Metal Vessel, an object through which a Djinn’s power may be summoned. That premise drives both the show’s adventures and its contests for political power alike. The story begins when Aladdin, a cheerful boy carrying a flute that houses the Djinn Ugo, meets Alibaba Saluja in the desert city of Qishan. Alibaba wants to conquer the nearby Dungeon Amon, partly to escape poverty and establish himself. Their expedition brings them into contact with Morgiana, a Fanalis girl enslaved by the Jamil household. After Amon is conquered, Morgiana gains her freedom and becomes Aladdin and Alibaba’s companion. Aladdin is revealed as a Magi, a rare magician chosen to guide kings. His role connects journeys to conflicts involving the Kou Empire, the Kingdom of Sindria, and the organization Al-Thamen. Important supporting figures include Sinbad, Sindria’s king and a Dungeon conqueror; Judar, a Magi aligned with the Kou Empire; and Hakuryuu Ren, a Kou prince whose life is shaped by family violence and ambition. The anime’s first season adapts material through the Balbadd arc, where Alibaba confronts the consequences of becoming a king candidate and Aladdin investigates the manipulation surrounding the country. It also incorporates the Zagan Dungeon storyline, in which Aladdin, Alibaba, Morgiana, Hakuryuu, and others face trials overseen by the Djinn Zagan. The series repeatedly links magical authority with slavery, imperial expansion, commerce, and resistance across its plot. Following this season, A-1 Pictures produced Magi: The Kingdom of Magic, a second television season that aired from October 6, 2013, to March 30, 2014. The franchise also received Magi: Adventure of Sinbad, an anime adaptation centered on Sinbad’s earlier life, including a television version broadcast in 2016. In North America, Aniplex of America licensed The Labyrinth of Magic, while the manga was published in English by Viz Media. The television adaptation is particularly associated with its colorful character designs, Rukh-based magic terminology, and an opening season that establishes Aladdin, Alibaba, and Morgiana as its central traveling trio for viewers.
