Friends

Friends is an American sitcom created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman, which debuted on NBC on September 22, 1994, and ended on May 6, 2004. Set primarily in Manhattan, it follows six friends navigating work, romance, and adulthood: Rachel Green, Monica Geller, Phoebe Buffay, Joey Tribbiani, Chandler Bing, and Ross Geller. The series ran for ten seasons and 236 episodes. Its central locations are Monica and Rachel’s apartment, across the hall from Joey and Chandler’s, and the coffeehouse Central Perk, where the group regularly meets.

Jennifer Aniston plays Rachel, who leaves her wedding in the pilot and begins working at Central Perk before developing a fashion career. Courteney Cox plays Monica, a chef whose competitive nature and organized habits recur throughout the show. Lisa Kudrow’s Phoebe is a masseuse and musician known for songs including “Smelly Cat.” Matt LeBlanc plays aspiring actor Joey, while Matthew Perry plays Chandler, whose sarcastic humor becomes a defining feature. David Schwimmer plays paleontologist Ross, whose on-and-off relationship with Rachel drives several major storylines.

Ross and Rachel’s relationship includes their first kiss in season two, the famous “we were on a break” dispute, a Las Vegas marriage, and a final reconciliation in the series finale. Monica and Chandler begin a secret relationship after sleeping together in London during Ross’s wedding to Emily Waltham. They later marry and adopt twins, Erica and Jack, in the final episode. Phoebe marries Mike Hannigan, played by Paul Rudd. Joey’s acting jobs include portraying Dr. Drake Ramoray on the fictional soap opera Days of Our Lives.

The cast’s guest performers include Tom Selleck as Monica’s older boyfriend Richard Burke, Maggie Wheeler as Chandler’s recurring girlfriend Janice, and James Michael Tyler as Central Perk manager Gunther, who harbors unrequited feelings for Rachel. The 2004 finale, “The Last One,” ends with Rachel getting off a plane to stay with Ross and the friends leaving their apartment keys behind before going for coffee. Friends won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2002. Aniston, Kudrow, and Perry also won acting Emmys for their work on the program.

After its original run, the six principal actors reunited for Friends: The Reunion, an unscripted HBO Max special released in 2021. Directed by Ben Winston, it returned Aniston, Cox, Kudrow, LeBlanc, Perry, and Schwimmer to the original soundstage, combining interviews, set visits, table reads, and guest appearances from several former cast members and celebrities.
