Fire Force

Fire Force is a Japanese television anime adapted from Atsushi Ohkubo’s manga of the same name. It follows Shinra Kusakabe, a third generation pyrokinetic firefighter whose ability to ignite his feet gives him the nickname “Devil’s Footprints.” In a world where people can suddenly become murderous flaming beings called Infernals, Shinra enlists in Special Fire Force Company 8. The Tokyo Empire’s Fire Force combines firefighting with exorcism: its companies put Infernals to rest while investigating the cause of the phenomenon. Shinra wants to be a hero, but his past is central to the story. A fire twelve years earlier apparently killed his mother, Mari, and younger brother, Sho; Shinra’s nervous grin led others to suspect him. Company 8 learns that Sho survived and became a powerful Third Generation aligned with the White Clad, a group serving the Evangelist. The series expands from individual Infernal incidents into a conflict over Adolla, another realm, and the Adolla Bursts possessed by rare pyrokinetics including Shinra and Sho. Company 8’s core includes captain Akitaru Obi, a non pyrokinetic firefighter; lieutenant Takehisa Hinawa, who controls fired bullets; sister Iris; second generation Maki Oze; and Arthur Boyle, Shinra’s rival and self styled knight. Later allies include engineer Vulcan Joseph and scientist Viktor Licht. Their inquiries expose links among the Fire Force, the Holy Sol Temple, Haijima Industries, and the White Clad. The first anime season was produced by David Production and aired in Japan from July to December 2019, with 24 episodes. Yuki Yase directed it; Kenichiro Suehiro composed its score. David Production also made the 24 episode second season, Fire Force 2nd Season, which aired from July to December 2020 under director Tatsuma Minamikawa. The source manga ran in Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine from September 2015 until February 2022 and was collected in 34 volumes. Ohkubo had previously created Soul Eater, and Fire Force eventually tied its fictional world to that earlier work through its ending. In the anime’s second season, Company 8 travels into the Nether beneath Tokyo, confronts White Clad operatives, and searches for additional pillars connected to Adolla. Its story also gives major attention to the engineer Vulcan, whose family history is entwined with Haijima Industries. Fire Force’s mythology treats combustion as both public disaster and religious mystery: the Holy Sol Temple’s faith centers on the Sun, while the Evangelist seeks a cataclysm called the Great Cataclysm. Company 8’s investigation becomes inseparable from Shinra’s attempt to find his family and stop it.
