Ascendance of a Bookworm

Ascendance of a Bookworm is a Japanese television anime adapted from Miya Kazuki's light novel series, illustrated by You Shiina. It follows Urano Motosu, a university student whose passion is books. When an earthquake kills her, she is reborn in another world as Myne, a sickly five year old girl. Her new home lacks paper, printing, and accessible books, so Myne decides to make them herself. The premise turns her bibliophilia into a struggle involving craft, commerce, class, and survival.

The anime was produced by Japanese studio Ajia-do Animation Works and directed by Mitsuru Hongo. Its first season aired in Japan from October to December 2019, adapting the portion of the story commonly identified as Part 1: Daughter of a Soldier. A second season followed from April to June 2020, and a third aired from April to June 2022. The series uses Myne's first person ambitions to explore a rigid preindustrial society where literacy is largely restricted to nobles, temples, and wealthy merchants. Books are costly handwritten objects, not ordinary household possessions. That constraint drives nearly every decision she makes.

In the first season, Myne lives with her parents and older sister Tuuli in the city of Ehrenfest. Her father Gunther serves as a city guard, while her mother Effa works as a dyer. Myne experiments with clay tablets, plant paper, and other substitutes before learning how difficult production is without resources. She forms important relationships with the merchant Benno, his apprentice Mark, and the blue priest Ferdinand. Her unusual mana, a magical force possessed by some people, becomes a dangerous secret because it attracts the attention of nobles and the temple.

Rather than presenting reincarnation as a simple advantage, the show repeatedly emphasizes Myne's physical limits and dependence on others. The recurring threat of the Devouring, an illness tied to uncontrolled mana, gives her bookmaking project urgent stakes. Her ambitions also reshape the lives of Lutz, the boy who becomes her business partner, and Gil, an orphan at the temple. The television adaptation is notable for preserving the source material's attention to making things: pulp, ink, tools, contracts, workshops, and trade networks matter as much as magic. In 2023, a new television anime was announced, with Wit Studio as its animation studio. The earlier seasons remain the original Ajia-do production that introduced Myne's long, specific campaign to bring books to ordinary people despite the world's entrenched social and economic barriers.
