Stig Asmussen is an American video game director and artist whose career is closely tied to Sony Santa Monica’s God of War series and Respawn Entertainment’s Star Wars Jedi games. Before becoming known as a director, he worked in art roles at Santa Monica Studio, contributing to the visual development of the original God of War, released for PlayStation 2 in 2005. He later served as art director on God of War II, the 2007 sequel in which Kratos pursues revenge against Zeus after being betrayed and stripped of his godhood. Asmussen directed God of War III, released in 2010, bringing the PlayStation 2-era Greek saga to PlayStation 3. The game opens with Kratos and the Titans climbing Mount Olympus and culminates in his confrontation with Zeus; its production emphasized enormous mythological set pieces, including battles involving Poseidon and Cronos. His direction placed him at the center of one of Sony’s biggest franchises. At Respawn Entertainment, Asmussen led development of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, released in November 2019. The single-player action-adventure follows former Jedi Padawan Cal Kestis after Order 66, as he searches for a holocron containing the locations of Force-sensitive children. The game combines lightsaber combat, Force abilities, traversal, and exploration across planets including Bracca, Zeffo, Kashyyyk, Dathomir, and Ilum. Its story features Cere Junda, Greez Dritus, Nightsister Merrin, and the Second Sister, an Imperial Inquisitor revealed as Trilla Suduri. Asmussen also directed Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, released in April 2023. Set five years after Fallen Order, it returns to Cal Kestis as he faces the Empire alongside allies such as Cere and Merrin. The game introduces Koboh as a major explorable location and adds combat stances that let Cal use different lightsaber configurations. It also introduces Bode Akuna, a mercenary who travels with Cal before the story reveals his connection to the Empire. After more than nine years at Respawn, EA announced in September 2023 that Asmussen was leaving the company. In March 2024, he announced Giant Skull, a Los Angeles-based studio created to make action-adventure games. The studio said it was developing a single-player action-adventure title built with Unreal Engine 5. Asmussen is Giant Skull’s chief executive officer and game director. His announced collaborators included former Respawn and Epic Games developers, including Jon Carr, Anthony Scott, and Brian Campbell. His career has moved from visual art leadership to directing large-scale licensed and original action-adventure projects for major game audiences.
