Oswaldo Rolla, born in Porto Alegre on 11 May 1909, was one of the decisive figures in Grêmio’s modern football history. He was widely called Foguinho, the name used for him by supporters, journalists and football historians. Rolla played for Grêmio before becoming the coach most strongly linked with the club’s extraordinary sequence of Campeonato Gaúcho victories. He died in Porto Alegre on 29 October 1996, returning the story to the city where it began. His career belongs especially to an era when Rio Grande do Sul’s state championship was the principal competitive measure for Grêmio and its local rivals. As Grêmio’s manager, Foguinho won the Campeonato Gaúcho ten times, a total that made him the club’s most successful coach in that competition. The championships came in 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1967, and 1968. Those results were not a single isolated title: they place Rolla at the center of Grêmio’s dominance in Porto Alegre and across the state during the 1950s and 1960s. His ten titles remain a benchmark in Grêmio’s managerial history and explain why Foguinho is remembered above all as a builder of championship teams rather than merely a former player or brief appointment. Rolla’s association with Grêmio was also marked by longevity across separate coaching spells, rather than one uninterrupted tenure. This matters because the ten state championships were accumulated over changing squads and different moments in the club’s development. His record therefore documents repeatable success in the competition Grêmio treated as its central annual objective. In the years before Brazil’s national league became the country’s dominant club tournament, the Campeonato Gaúcho carried enormous sporting importance for teams from Rio Grande do Sul. Rolla’s achievements must be read in that specific setting: his standing rests on winning the state championship again and again. The nickname Foguinho is inseparable from Rolla’s public identity, but the measurable basis of his reputation is his Grêmio record. Ten Campeonato Gaúcho crowns under one coach is an exceptional part of the club’s documented history. They include titles on both sides of the 1960s, showing that his influence extended beyond one successful generation. For Grêmio, Rolla represents a foundational coaching legacy: a local figure who first wore the club’s colors and then directed it through repeated state triumphs. His life dates and his championship total give Foguinho’s story historical contours, centered on Grêmio and Rio Grande do Sul.
