Omar Sy

Omar Sy was born on January 20, 1978, in Trappes, a town west of Paris. He grew up in a family with Senegalese and Mauritanian roots: his father came from Senegal, and his mother from Mauritania. Before becoming a major screen actor, he worked in French radio and comedy. His early partnership with Fred Testot produced the duo Omar et Fred, whose short comic sketches became familiar to Canal+ viewers through Service après-vente des émissions.

Sy had film parts in productions including Les Seigneurs and the comedy Tellement proches, but his international breakthrough came with Intouchables (2011). Directed by Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano, the film pairs him with François Cluzet. Sy plays Driss, a young man from the Paris banlieue hired to assist Philippe, a wealthy quadriplegic aristocrat. The story follows the initially uneasy relationship that becomes a friendship, while Driss brings energy and directness into Philippe's tightly controlled life. The film became an enormous French box-office success and traveled widely abroad. For that role he won the 2012 César Award for Best Actor, becoming the first Black performer to receive that honor.

His subsequent work moved between French cinema and Hollywood franchises. In X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), he portrayed Bishop, a soldier who can absorb energy and release it as concussive force. In Jurassic World (2015), he played Barry Sembène, the velociraptor handler and colleague of Chris Pratt's Owen Grady. He returned as Barry in Jurassic World: Dominion (2022).

France remained central to Sy's career. He starred in Samba (2014), another Nakache-Toledano film, as a Senegalese migrant confronting precarious work and residency in Paris. In Chocolat (2016), directed by Roschdy Zem, he played Rafael Padilla, the Cuban-born clown known as Chocolat, opposite James Thierrée as Footit. The drama draws on Padilla's career in late-nineteenth-century French popular entertainment and on the exploitation behind his stage persona.

A newer global audience knows Sy as Assane Diop in Netflix's Lupin. The series, created by George Kay and adapted in spirit from Maurice Leblanc's Arsène Lupin stories, begins with Assane seeking justice after his father Babakar Diop is framed for stealing a necklace belonging to the wealthy Pellegrini family. Assane uses disguises, sleight of hand, and Lupin-inspired schemes rather than simply reproducing Leblanc's gentleman thief. Sy also served as an executive producer on the show. Its success made him one of the most visible French actors working across the world.
