Norman Reedus was born on January 6, 1969, in Hollywood, Florida. He spent portions of his childhood in Los Angeles and lived in Japan, Spain, and Ireland with his family. Before acting, he worked at a Harley-Davidson shop in Venice, California. His screen debut came in Guillermo del Toro’s 1997 horror film Mimic, where he played Jeremy, a young man caught in the investigation of mutant cockroach-like creatures beneath New York City. Reedus then appeared in films including Six Ways to Sunday, Gossip, Blade II, and American Gangster. Early television credits included Charmed and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. His most famous screen role is Daryl Dixon on AMC’s The Walking Dead. Introduced in the 2010 series premiere, Daryl was created for television rather than appearing in the original Robert Kirkman comic book series. Initially depicted as the volatile younger brother of Merle Dixon, Daryl became one of the show’s central survivors. Reedus remained with the production through its eleven-season run and continued as Daryl in the spinoff The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. That series premiered in 2023 and follows Daryl after he washes ashore in France. Reedus also directed the music video for “Wicked as It Seems,” a 2012 song by his bandmate and friend Keith Caputo. Outside scripted drama, Reedus hosted Ride with Norman Reedus, a travel series in which he rides motorcycles with guests and visits communities. The program debuted on AMC in 2016 and drew on his enthusiasm for motorcycles. He has also worked in modeling and music videos. His video appearances include Björk’s “Violently Happy” and Lady Gaga’s “Judas,” the latter casting him opposite Gaga in an imagery-heavy production. In 2019 he took a leading role in the video game Death Stranding, created by Hideo Kojima. He portrayed courier Sam Porter Bridges, whose deliveries connect isolated settlements across a fractured United States. Reedus returned as Sam in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, announced as a sequel by Kojima Productions. His collaboration with Kojima followed the cancelled Silent Hills project, whose playable teaser P.T. featured Reedus before the game was discontinued. Reedus has one son, Mingus Lucien Reedus, with model Helena Christensen. He later became engaged to actor Diane Kruger, his co-star in the 2015 film Sky. They have a daughter together. Beyond performing, Reedus is a photographer and has published photography books, including The Sun’s Coming Up... Like a Big Bald Head.
