Lucas Leiva

Lucas Pezzini Leiva (born 9 January 1987 in Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul) is a Brazilian former footballer whose career took him from Grêmio to Liverpool, Lazio and back to Grêmio. Primarily a defensive midfielder, he was valued for ball-winning, positional discipline and simple distribution. He began in Grêmio’s youth system and made his senior debut in 2005. In the 2006 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, he became a central figure as Grêmio finished third, earning recognition as the league’s Bola de Ouro winner for the season. That campaign also helped establish him as one of Brazilian football’s notable young midfielders. Liverpool signed Leiva in May 2007, shortly after he had appeared for Brazil at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup. He spent ten seasons at Anfield, initially facing scrutiny while adapting from an attacking midfield role to a deeper one. Under managers including Rafael Benítez, Kenny Dalglish, Brendan Rodgers and Jürgen Klopp, he developed into a specialist holding midfielder. He played 346 competitive matches for Liverpool, a total that placed him among the club’s most used overseas players when he left. His Liverpool goal came against Steaua București in the 2010–11 UEFA Europa League. He won the League Cup in 2012. Leiva joined Lazio in July 2017 and quickly became an important part of the Roman club’s midfield. His first season ended with the 2017–18 Supercoppa Italiana, as Lazio beat Juventus 3–2. He also helped Lazio win the Coppa Italia in 2018–19, defeating Atalanta 2–0 in the final. In 2019, he was named Serie A’s Midfielder of the Year, an award reflecting his influence in Simone Inzaghi’s side. Across five seasons, he made more than 190 appearances for Lazio in all competitions. His departure followed the expiration of his contract in 2022, ending a spell where he wore the captain’s armband. At international level, Leiva won 24 caps for Brazil between 2007 and 2013. He was in the squad that won the 2007 FIFA Under-20 South American Championship and represented Brazil at the 2008 Olympic tournament, where the team took bronze. His senior appearances included the 2011 Copa América in Argentina. In June 2022, he returned to Grêmio. During medical examinations in December, doctors identified a heart issue, leading to a temporary suspension from training. In March 2023, he announced his retirement after being diagnosed with myocardial scarring. His final professional chapter therefore lasted only months, but it completed his return.
