Kiefer Sutherland

Kiefer Sutherland was born on December 21, 1966, in London, England, to Canadian actors Donald Sutherland and Shirley Douglas. Although born in Britain, he grew up primarily in Canada after his parents separated, and he became one of the country’s most recognizable international actors. His surname connects him to a distinguished family history: his maternal grandfather was Tommy Douglas, Saskatchewan premier and a major figure in the creation of Canada’s universal healthcare system.

Sutherland’s film career gained momentum in the 1980s. He appeared in Rob Reiner’s Stand by Me (1986) as the intimidating Ace Merrill, then played vampire David in Joel Schumacher’s The Lost Boys (1987). He joined the ensemble of Young Guns (1988), portraying Doc Scurlock alongside Emilio Estevez, Charlie Sheen, and Lou Diamond Phillips. Other notable early roles included Flatliners (1990), where he played a medical student experimenting with near-death experiences, and A Few Good Men (1992), in which he appeared as Lieutenant Jonathan Kendrick. He also played Athos in The Three Musketeers (1993) and starred in the science-fiction film Dark City (1998).

His defining television role arrived with 24, which premiered in 2001. Sutherland played Jack Bauer, a counterterrorism agent whose missions unfolded in real time, with each season covering 24 hours. The series became known for its ticking-clock structure, political conspiracies, and morally difficult decisions. Sutherland won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2006 and received a Golden Globe for the role in 2002. He returned as Bauer for the limited series 24: Live Another Day in 2014.

After 24, Sutherland led the political drama Designated Survivor, playing Tom Kirkman, a low-ranking cabinet secretary who becomes president after an attack destroys the Capitol. The show ran from 2016 to 2019. He later starred in the Paramount+ series Rabbit Hole (2023) as John Weir, a corporate espionage specialist framed for murder.

Sutherland has also pursued music. He released the country-rock album Down in a Hole in 2016, followed by Reckless & Me in 2019 and Bloor Street in 2022. His career therefore spans independent films, major studio productions, long-form television, and songwriting, while Jack Bauer remains the performance most closely associated with his name.
