Jorge Fernando Pinheiro de Jesus, commonly known as Jorge Jesus, was born on 24 July 1954 in Amadora, Portugal. He began his professional football career as a midfielder, playing for Sporting CP, Olhanense, and Vitória de Setúbal among other Portuguese clubs. His playing career was modest, but he became prominent through coaching, developing a reputation for intense training, attacking football, and detailed tactical preparation. Jesus started managing in the late 1980s and gradually advanced through Portugal’s football system. His first major breakthrough came at Braga, where he led the club to the 2008–09 UEFA Cup round of 32 and then guided it to the 2010 Europa League final after taking charge of Benfica. Benfica lost that final to Atlético Madrid, but Jesus’s work attracted national attention. At Benfica, from 2009 to 2015, he won three Primeira Liga titles, in 2009–10, 2013–14, and 2014–15. He also won the Portuguese Cup once and the Portuguese League Cup five times. In 2013–14, Benfica reached the Europa League final, losing to Sevilla on penalties. The following season, Benfica again reached the final, this time losing to Sevilla in another penalty shootout. His Benfica teams were recognized for their coordinated pressing, aggressive full-backs, and structured attacking movements. Jesus later coached Sporting CP, Al-Hilal, and Flamengo. His most celebrated achievement came with Flamengo in 2019. In his first season in Brazil, he won the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A and the Copa Libertadores. Flamengo defeated River Plate 2–1 in the Libertadores final, scoring twice late through Gabriel Barbosa, known as Gabigol. Jesus also won the Campeonato Carioca, the Supercopa do Brasil, and the Recopa Sudamericana during his Flamengo tenure. He returned to Benfica in 2020 but left in December 2021 after a difficult campaign. In 2022, he managed Fenerbahçe in Turkey, winning the Turkish Cup in 2023. He then returned to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia. During the 2023–24 season, Al-Hilal won the Saudi Pro League and the King Cup, while also setting a Guinness-recognized world record for consecutive victories in men’s football. The team’s winning run reached 34 matches. Jesus is known for demanding tactical discipline without abandoning offensive ambition. His career spans Portugal, Brazil, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia, and his achievements with Benfica and Flamengo established him as one of the most successful Portuguese coaches of his generation.
