Jessica Chastain

Jessica Chastain was born on March 24, 1977, in Sacramento, California, and grew up in a large working-class family with siblings. She studied acting at the Juilliard School in New York after receiving a scholarship supported by actor Robin Williams. Her early professional work included Shakespeare productions and television appearances, but her major film breakthrough came in 2011, when she appeared in six films, including Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life, Take Shelter, Coriolanus, and The Help. Her performance as Celia Foote in The Help earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. This role announced her arrival.

In 2012, Chastain played Maya, a CIA intelligence analyst pursuing Osama bin Laden, in Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty. The role drew on a fictionalized composite character and earned Chastain her second Oscar nomination, this time for Best Actress. She followed with varied projects rather than repeating one image: the science-fiction epic Interstellar, Guillermo del Toro’s gothic horror film Crimson Peak, Ridley Scott’s The Martian, and the crime drama A Most Violent Year. She also appeared in The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, a three-part relationship drama, demonstrating a willingness to work in intimate, formally unusual productions with emotional precision throughout.

Chastain won the Academy Award for Best Actress for portraying televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker in The Eyes of Tammy Faye (2021). The film follows Bakker’s rise alongside Jim Bakker, the expansion of their Christian television ministry, and the scandals that destroyed their public standing. Chastain’s transformation involved prosthetic makeup, vocal and physical choices, and close attention to Bakker’s public persona. She had previously earned Oscar nominations for Zero Dark Thirty and The Help, making the win especially significant. On Broadway, she played Nora Helmer in a 2023 revival of Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, earning a Tony Award nomination there.

Beyond acting, Chastain has worked as a producer through Freckle Films, the company she founded with producer Kelly Carmichael. Freckle Films produced The Eyes of Tammy Faye and the television series Scenes from a Marriage, in which Chastain starred opposite Oscar Isaac. Her filmography also includes Molly’s Game, where she played sports-betting organizer Molly Bloom; Woman Walks Ahead, as artist Catherine Weldon; It Chapter Two, as Beverly Marsh; and Memory, a 2023 drama directed by Michel Franco.
