Jason Momoa was born Joseph Jason Namakaeha Momoa on August 1, 1979, in Honolulu, Hawaii, and raised partly in Norwalk, Iowa, by his mother, Coni. His father, Joseph, is Hawaiian, while his mother has German and Irish ancestry. After high school, he studied marine biology at the University of Hawaii, but modeling redirected his path. In 1999, he won Hawaii’s Model of the Year and joined Baywatch Hawaii, portraying Jason Ioane for its final season before pursuing acting full-time professionally. His breakthrough came with Stargate Atlantis, where he played the imposing Warlord Ronon Dex from 2005 to 2009. The role established his screen presence, but his international profile expanded after he became Khal Drogo in HBO’s Game of Thrones. He appeared in the first season in 2011, speaking little English while portraying the Dothraki leader opposite Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen. Although Drogo died early, his performance helped introduce Momoa to worldwide audiences and led to film opportunities in Hollywood. In 2014, director Zack Snyder cast Momoa as Arthur Curry, better known as Aquaman, in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. He reprised the role in Justice League (2017) and headlined Aquaman (2018), directed by James Wan. The latter follows Arthur’s struggle to claim Atlantis’s throne, confront his half-brother Orm, and stop the pirate David Kane, called Black Manta. Aquaman became a major commercial success, earning more than one billion dollars worldwide. Momoa returned in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Beyond superhero films, Momoa has chosen physically demanding and unconventional projects. He wrote, directed, and starred in the 2014 drama Road to Paloma, playing a Native American man fleeing after avenging his mother’s murder. He portrayed Declan Harp in the historical drama series Frontier, which Netflix released from 2016 to 2018. In Denis Villeneuve’s Dune (2021), Momoa played Duncan Idaho, a swordmaster and loyal ally of Paul Atreides. He appeared as Duncan in Dune: Part Two (2024), reprising that character. Momoa has also pursued music and environmental advocacy. He was married to actor Lisa Bonet from 2017 until their divorce was finalized in 2024. They have two children, Lola Iolani and Nakoa-Wolf, and Momoa is stepfather to Bonet’s daughter, Zoë Kravitz. His public image combines Hawaiian heritage, a distinctive physical presence, and a career that moved from local television to global franchises. Rather than being defined only by Aquaman, his filmography includes fantasy, historical drama, science fiction, and independent filmmaking.
