Jake Gyllenhaal

American actor Jake Gyllenhaal, born in 1980, starred in Donnie Darko, Brokeback Mountain, Nightcrawler, and earned Academy Award nomination for Brokeback Mountain.

Jake Gyllenhaal was born on December 19, 1980, in Los Angeles, California, into a film family. His father, Stephen Gyllenhaal, is a director, and his mother, Naomi Foner, is a screenwriter. His older sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal, is also an actor. He made his screen debut in Ron Underwood’s City Slickers in 1991 and later appeared in his father’s film A Dangerous Woman. Gyllenhaal’s major breakthrough came with Richard Kelly’s Donnie Darko in 2001. He played Donnie, a troubled Virginia teenager who experiences visions of a sinister figure in a rabbit costume named Frank. The film initially had a modest theatrical run but became a cult favorite. Maggie Gyllenhaal played Donnie’s sister, Elizabeth, in the same film. In 2005, Gyllenhaal portrayed Marine Anthony Swofford in Sam Mendes’s Jarhead, adapted from Swofford’s memoir about the Gulf War. That year he also played Jack Twist in Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain, opposite Heath Ledger as Ennis Del Mar. Jack and Ennis begin a secret romantic relationship while working as sheep herders in Wyoming, and the story follows the consequences of their bond over decades. Gyllenhaal received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for the role. His later work includes David Fincher’s Zodiac, in which he played San Francisco Chronicle cartoonist Robert Graysmith, whose interest in the Zodiac killer grows into an obsessive investigation. In Duncan Jones’s Source Code, he played Army pilot Colter Stevens, who repeatedly relives the final minutes before a commuter train explosion. He starred as Detective Loki in Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners, investigating the disappearance of two young girls. Gyllenhaal earned strong attention for Nightcrawler in 2014, playing Louis Bloom, an ambitious Los Angeles freelancer who films violent crime scenes and sells footage to television news stations. His character’s manipulation of crime scenes and pursuit of increasingly graphic material drives the film’s critique of local-news sensationalism. He followed it with Southpaw, portraying boxer Billy Hope, and Nocturnal Animals, Tom Ford’s thriller in which he played Edward Sheffield, a novelist whose manuscript becomes central to the story. On stage, Gyllenhaal has appeared on Broadway in Constellations, Sea Wall/A Life, and the 2022 revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George, playing painter Georges Seurat. He joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Spider-Man: Far From Home as Quentin Beck, also known as Mysterio, a former Stark Industries employee who creates elaborate illusions. In 2024, he starred in the remake of Road House as former UFC fighter Elwood Dalton.
