Jake Gyllenhaal

Jake Gyllenhaal was born in Los Angeles, California, on December 19, 1980, into a film-making family: his father, Stephen Gyllenhaal, is a director, and his mother, Naomi Foner, is a screenwriter. His sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal, also became an actor. He made his screen debut as Daniel Robbins in City Slickers (1991), directed by Ron Underwood, and later appeared in his father’s 1993 drama A Dangerous Woman. As a teenager, he was offered a role in The Mighty Ducks, but his parents declined it.

His breakthrough came with Richard Kelly’s 2001 film Donnie Darko, in which he played troubled suburban teenager Donnie Darko. The story follows Donnie after a jet-engine crash and involves visions of a figure in a rabbit costume, Frank. The film initially performed modestly but became a cult favorite. Gyllenhaal also played Homer Hickam in October Sky (1999), based on Hickam’s memoir Rocket Boys, and portrayed Holden Worther in The Good Girl (2002). In 2005, he played Marine Anthony Swofford in Sam Mendes’s Jarhead, adapted from Swofford’s memoir.

He earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Brokeback Mountain (2005), Ang Lee’s drama about the long, difficult relationship between cowboys Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar. Gyllenhaal played Jack opposite Heath Ledger as Ennis. His other 2000s roles included Robert Graysmith in David Fincher’s Zodiac (2007), a film centered on the unsolved Zodiac killings, and a detective in Dennis Lehane’s 2007 adaptation of Gone Baby Gone. He starred as Prince Dastan in Disney’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010), based on Ubisoft’s video-game franchise.

In 2013, Gyllenhaal played Detective Loki in Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners, alongside Hugh Jackman, and appeared as a Los Angeles police officer in End of Watch. His performance as freelance television cameraman Lou Bloom in Nightcrawler (2014) brought nominations from the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild. He lost weight for the role, whose character exploits Los Angeles crime footage for news. In Southpaw (2015), he portrayed boxer Billy Hope, and in 2017 he reunited with Villeneuve for the science-fiction film Life.

Gyllenhaal made his Broadway debut in Constellations in 2015, playing Roland opposite Ruth Wilson. He later starred in the Broadway musical Sunday in the Park with George (2017) as Georges Seurat. In Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), he played Quentin Beck, also known as Mysterio, a former Stark Industries employee who deceives Peter Parker. In 2024, he starred in Road House.
