Jacob Tremblay

Jacob Tremblay was born on October 5, 2006, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and grew up in nearby Langley. He began acting professionally as a child, appearing in television commercials before moving into screen roles. His first feature film was The Smurfs 2, released in 2013, in which he played Blue Winslow. Early credits also included guest appearances on Motive, The Haunting Hour, and The Last Man on Earth. Tremblay's major breakthrough came with Room, Lenny Abrahamson's 2015 adaptation of Emma Donoghue's novel. He played Jack Newsome, a five-year-old boy held captive with his mother Joy, portrayed by Brie Larson. Much of the film presents Jack's limited understanding of the single room where he has spent his life, followed by his bewildering adjustment to the outside world. His performance earned the Critics Choice Movie Award for Best Young Performer and a nomination from the Screen Actors Guild for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. In 2016, he appeared in Before I Wake, playing a child whose dreams become real and dangerous. That year, he also portrayed a young boy in Burn Your Maps and appeared in the television miniseries The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses. In The Book of Henry, released in 2017, Tremblay played Peter Carpenter, the younger brother of a gifted boy who plans to protect their neighbor. His most visible 2017 role was Auggie Pullman in Wonder, Stephen Chbosky's adaptation of R. J. Palacio's novel about a boy with Treacher Collins syndrome entering school after years of homeschooling. The film follows Auggie's friendships, bullying, family relationships, and gradual acceptance at Beecher Prep. Tremblay next played Rory McKenna's son in Shane Black's The Predator, a 2018 science-fiction sequel in which government experiments unleash the alien hunter in suburban America. He then starred as Max in Good Boys, a 2019 comedy directed by Gene Stupnitsky, about three sixth-grade friends trying to replace a drone before their parents return. His later screen credits include Doctor Sleep, where he played the ghostly boy Bradley Trevor, and The Twilight Zone episode “The Wunderkind,” in which he played a politically ambitious child. Tremblay has also built a voice-acting career. He voiced Luca Paguro in Pixar's Luca, released in 2021, and Elmer in Netflix's My Father's Dragon, released in 2022. In 2023, he supplied the voice of Flounder in Disney's live-action The Little Mermaid, continuing his varied onscreen work.
