Jaafar Jackson

Jaafar Jackson is an American singer, songwriter, dancer, and actor best known as a member of the Jackson family and for being cast to portray his uncle Michael Jackson in the feature film Michael. Born July 25, 1996, he is the son of Jermaine Jackson and Alejandra Genevieve Oaziaza. Jermaine Jackson, a founding member of the Jackson 5, helped establish the musical dynasty into which Jaafar was born. Jaafar is also a nephew of Janet Jackson and of Michael Jackson, whose solo career made him one of popular music's most commercially successful and closely watched figures. His family connection is central to public interest in his work, but his music career predates the film announcement. In 2019, Jaafar released the single "Got Me Singing," an original song credited to Jaafar Jackson. The track was accompanied by a music video issued through his official channels, emphasizing singing and dance performance rather than presenting him solely as a relative of Michael Jackson. He also appeared on Lifetime's reality series The Jacksons: Next Generation, which followed members of the younger generation of the family. The program documented his efforts alongside brothers and cousins to develop music careers under the unusually visible Jackson name. The casting of Jaafar as Michael Jackson was announced in January 2023. The film, titled Michael, is directed by Antoine Fuqua and produced by Graham King; its screenplay is by John Logan. Lionsgate is the distributor in the United States, while Universal Pictures handles international distribution. The production was authorized by the Michael Jackson estate, a fact that gives it access to rights and material associated with the estate but does not make it a documentary. Fuqua said the filmmakers selected Jaafar after a worldwide search, and Jackson family members publicly supported the choice. The announcement put a performer from Michael's family in the demanding position of representing an uncle whose career encompassed the Jackson 5, the Jacksons, and worldwide solo stardom. Jaafar was required to recreate Michael's singing and dancing for the role, rather than simply provide a vocal likeness. Early production photographs released by the filmmakers showed him in costume as Michael during the Dangerous era, a period associated with the 1991 album Dangerous and its accompanying tour. The image demonstrated the film's intention to dramatize recognizable stages of Michael's life. Jaafar's casting therefore joins his own recorded music and television experience with a high-profile acting debut centered on his uncle.
