Gong Hyo-jin

Gong Hyo-jin (born April 4, 1980) is a South Korean actor whose screen career has moved between independent-minded films, romantic comedies, and television melodramas. Born in Seoul, she spent part of her adolescence in Australia after moving there with her family, then returned to Korea in 1997. Her first film appearance was in Kim Tae-yong and Min Kyu-dong’s 1999 horror film Memento Mori, the second entry in the Whispering Corridors series. The film, set at a girls’ high school, became a cult title and gave her an early role outside conventional debut-star material. She became more widely recognized through films including Volcano High (2001), Conduct Zero (2002), and Ryu Seung-wan’s Arahan (2004). In 2006, she played the eldest daughter in Kim Tae-yong’s Family Ties, an ensemble drama about interconnected households; the role brought major Korean film-actress recognition. Her performance as the socially abrasive former schoolmate in Lee Kyoung-mi’s Crush and Blush (2008) further established her willingness to take unglamorous, sharply comic parts. She also appeared in the 2012 comedy Love Fiction and the 2016 thriller Missing. On television, Gong’s first leading role came opposite Rain in Sang Doo! Let’s Go to School (2003). Her portrayal of a doctor in Thank You (2007), a series involving a child living with HIV, drew attention for its restrained tone. She then headlined restaurant romance Pasta (2010), playing kitchen assistant Seo Yoo-kyung opposite Lee Sun-kyun. In The Greatest Love (2011), she played faded idol Gu Ae-jung and paired with Cha Seung-won. The Hong sisters’ fantasy romance The Master’s Sun (2013) cast her as Tae Gong-sil, a woman who sees ghosts, alongside So Ji-sub. Her later dramas include It’s Okay, That’s Love (2014), in which she played psychiatrist Ji Hae-soo opposite Jo In-sung, and The Producers (2015), where she was variety-program music producer Tak Ye-jin. In When the Camellia Blooms (2019), she portrayed single mother and bar owner Dong-baek in the fictional town of Ongsan. The drama won the Grand Prize, or Daesang, at the 2019 KBS Drama Awards for Gong, and it received the Daesang at the 56th Baeksang Arts Awards. Gong married singer Kevin Oh in New York City in October 2022. Her work uses distinctive voice and offbeat comic timing, avoiding flawless heroines. Across titles such as Pasta, The Greatest Love, The Master’s Sun, and When the Camellia Blooms, she became associated with television heroines whose jobs, family circumstances, and emotional awkwardness drive stories.
