Manuel Francisco dos Santos, known worldwide as Garrincha, was a Brazilian footballer whose dribbling transformed the right wing into a place of improvisation and delight. Born on October 28, 1933, in Pau Grande, Mage, in Rio de Janeiro state, he grew up with physical conditions including a curved spine and legs of unequal length. Those characteristics did not prevent him from becoming one of football's most celebrated players. His nickname, Garrincha, referred to a small bird found locally, a name given in childhood. He later died in Rio de Janeiro on January 20, 1983, aged forty-nine, after years of alcoholism. Garrincha joined Botafogo in 1953, after impressing in a trial against the club's defender, Nilton Santos. He spent the decisive part of his club career there, winning the Campeonato Carioca in 1957, 1961, and 1962. At Botafogo, his combination with teammates such as Didi, Nilton Santos, and later Amarildo helped create one of Brazil's great sides. Garrincha was especially renowned for stopping before accelerating, repeatedly beating the same fullback along the touchline. His feints were not merely decorative: they produced crosses, chances, and goals in an era when wide players often carried heavy creative responsibility for Botafogo and Brazil alike. For Brazil, Garrincha became inseparable from the World Cup triumphs of 1958 and 1962. In Sweden in 1958, he played on the right in a team containing Pele, Didi, Vava, and Zagallo. Brazil beat Sweden 5-2 in the final, securing its first World Cup. At the 1962 tournament, Pele was injured early, and Garrincha became the central attacking force. He scored twice against England in the quarter-final and twice against Chile in the semi-final. Brazil then defeated Czechoslovakia 3-1 in the final, retaining the title. Garrincha finished as one of the tournament's leading scorers and was named its best player by FIFA. His career also exposed football's harsh realities. After leaving Botafogo, he played for Corinthians, Portuguesa of Sao Paulo, Flamengo, and Olaria, while brief spells took him to Colombia and France. Injuries and alcoholism increasingly damaged his life and performances. In 1966, he appeared at another World Cup, but Brazil were eliminated in the group stage; it was his last tournament. His 1973 farewell match at Maracana brought together former Brazil stars and symbolized his extraordinary public appeal. Yet the final years were marked by financial hardship and repeated hospitalizations. Garrincha's legacy endures in film footage, Botafogo memory, and Brazilian football.
