Daniel de Oliveira is a Brazilian actor whose film and television work includes portrayals of the musician Cazuza, a murdered political prisoner and a character in a story set during Brazil’s military dictatorship. Born in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, in 1977, he became widely known through the 2004 biographical film *Cazuza: O Tempo Não Pára*. Directed by Sandra Werneck and Walter Carvalho, the film casts Oliveira as Cazuza, the rock singer and songwriter who first gained prominence with Barão Vermelho and later pursued a solo career. The role required Oliveira to portray both the singer’s public performances and his struggle with AIDS before his death in 1990.
The same year, Oliveira starred in *Cabocla*, a TV Globo adaptation of Ribeiro Couto’s novel. He played Luís Jerônimo, a young man who travels to the countryside and falls in love with Zuca, played by Vanessa Giácomo. The role brought him to a national television audience while his portrayal of Cazuza was appearing in cinemas. Oliveira and Giácomo later married and had two sons; their marriage ended in divorce.
Oliveira returned to Brazilian political history in *Zuzu Angel* (2006), directed by Sérgio Rezende. He played Stuart Angel, the son of fashion designer Zuzu Angel, portrayed by Patrícia Pillar. Stuart was arrested, tortured and killed by agents of Brazil’s military dictatorship. The film follows his mother’s efforts to discover what happened to him and to publicize the crime. In *Batismo de Sangue* (2007), Oliveira played Frei Betto, one of the Dominican friars whose experiences of repression under the dictatorship are depicted in the film. These two roles placed him in stories about different people confronting the same period of Brazilian history.
A different kind of central role came in *A Festa da Menina Morta*, the feature-directing debut of actor Matheus Nachtergaele. Oliveira played Santinho, a young man treated as a spiritual figure by a remote community after an event involving a dead girl. The film was selected for the Un Certain Regard section of the 2008 Cannes Film Festival. Across these productions, Oliveira’s work spans a popular music biography, a literary television adaptation, historical dramas and a film about faith and collective belief. Cazuza, Stuart Angel, Frei Betto and Santinho are not interchangeable parts: each connects his screen career to a distinct Brazilian story, from the country’s rock scene to the lasting consequences of dictatorship.
