Dan Goor

Dan Goor is an American television writer and producer best known as the co-creator and longtime showrunner of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. He created the police-workplace comedy with Michael Schur, his former colleague from The Office and Parks and Recreation. Brooklyn Nine-Nine premiered on Fox on September 17, 2013, with Andy Samberg as Detective Jake Peralta and Andre Braugher as Captain Raymond Holt of the fictional 99th precinct in Brooklyn. Goor helped shape the series’ mixture of joke-dense ensemble comedy, cases, and stories about a precinct whose central authority figure was an openly gay Black captain. The program’s network history is central to Goor’s career. Fox cancelled it in May 2018 after five seasons; NBC picked it up the following day for a sixth season, following a prominent campaign by viewers and performers. The show ultimately ran for eight seasons and 153 episodes. Its final season aired on NBC in 2021, ending with “The Last Day,” which was broadcast on September 16. Goor was an executive producer throughout the series and shared writing credit on its pilot with Schur. Before Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Goor worked on several influential American comedy programs. He wrote for Late Night with Conan O’Brien and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, experiences that placed him in both traditional late-night and satirical-news formats. He later joined the staff of NBC’s Parks and Recreation, where he served as a writer and executive producer. At Parks and Recreation, he collaborated again with Schur, the show’s co-creator, and contributed during its run as an ensemble comedy set in the fictional Indiana town of Pawnee. Goor’s credited work on Brooklyn Nine-Nine includes not simply a premise but management of a large recurring cast: Samberg, Braugher, Stephanie Beatriz, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, Joe Lo Truglio, Chelsea Peretti, and Joel McKinnon Miller. The series also became known for annual “Halloween Heist” episodes, in which precinct members compete to claim a symbolic title, and for storylines involving Holt and his husband Kevin Cozner. In 2020, after protests against police violence, Goor said the writers had discarded four completed scripts for the eighth season and would reconsider how comedy portrayed policing. The shortened final season subsequently opened with “The Good Ones,” an episode that directly addressed police misconduct and Rosa Diaz’s decision to leave the force. Across those projects, Goor’s creative role has been as a comedy showrunner responsible for translating a workplace premise into episode-level stories, rather than as an on-screen performer.
