Dakota Johnson was born on October 4, 1989, in Austin, Texas, into a family deeply connected to American film and television. Her father is actor Don Johnson, her mother is actor Melanie Griffith, and her maternal grandmother is Hitchcock star Tippi Hedren. Johnson spent part of her childhood in Colorado and attended the New Roads School in Santa Monica. She began acting as a child alongside Griffith in the 1999 film Crazy in Alabama, directed by her stepfather Antonio Banderas. In 2006, she was named Miss Golden Globe, becoming the first second-generation recipient of that honor at the ceremony in Hollywood.
Her early adult film roles included a small part in The Social Network (2010), as Amelia Ritter, and appearances in Beastly and 21 Jump Street (both 2012). She also played Kate Fox in the short-lived Fox comedy series Ben and Kate, which premiered in 2012. Her major breakthrough came with Fifty Shades of Grey (2015), an adaptation of E. L. James's novel. Johnson portrayed Anastasia Steele, a literature student whose relationship with Christian Grey drives the story. She reprised the role in Fifty Shades Darker (2017) and Fifty Shades Freed (2018). The trilogy made her internationally recognizable and earned substantial commercial attention.
Johnson subsequently pursued projects across comedy, thriller, horror, and drama. In How to Be Single (2016), she played Alice, a young woman navigating independence in New York City. She starred in Luca Guadagnino's Suspiria (2018), a reimagining of Dario Argento's 1977 film, playing American dance student Susie Bannion. That same year, she appeared in Drew Goddard's Bad Times at the El Royale as Emily Summers, one of several strangers whose secrets collide at a California hotel. Her later credits include the independent drama The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019), The High Note (2020), and Maggie Gyllenhaal's directorial debut, The Lost Daughter.
In The Lost Daughter, Johnson played Nina, a young mother whose difficult relationship with motherhood affects the film's central character. She then starred as Anne Elliot in Netflix's Persuasion (2022), a contemporary adaptation of Jane Austen's novel. In 2024, she led the Marvel film Madame Web as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic who develops clairvoyant abilities. Johnson has also worked behind the scenes: she co-founded the production company TeaTime Pictures with Ro Donnelly, and has used it to develop film and television projects. Beyond acting, she drew notice for her candid responses in interviews about the Fifty Shades series and Hollywood.
