Cláudio Taffarel

Cláudio André Mergen Taffarel, born on 8 May 1966 in Santa Rosa, Rio Grande do Sul, emerged from Internacional’s youth system and made his senior debut in 1985. The goalkeeper became first-choice during a period when Internacional reached the 1987 Brazilian championship final. His calm positioning and penalty-saving reputation earned selection for Brazil before he had turned 23, beginning an international career that ultimately produced 101 appearances, according to FIFA’s historical records. At the 1990 World Cup in Italy, Taffarel started every match as Brazil reached the round of sixteen, where Argentina eliminated them 1–0. Four years later, under coach Carlos Alberto Parreira, he played every minute of Brazil’s victorious campaign in the United States. The final against Italy finished goalless after extra time; Taffarel saved Daniele Massaro’s shootout attempt, before Roberto Baggio sent Italy’s final kick over the crossbar. Brazil secured its fourth world title. Taffarel returned to the World Cup stage in France in 1998, again as Brazil’s starter. In the semifinal against the Netherlands, he saved penalties from Phillip Cocu and Ronald de Boer in a 4–2 shootout victory. Brazil lost the final 3–0 to hosts France, but Taffarel had reached three consecutive World Cups as his country’s number-one. He also won Copa América in 1989 and 1997, and was in Brazil’s silver-medal squad at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. His club career took him from Internacional to Parma in 1990, where he helped the Italian side win the 1992 Coppa Italia and the 1993 European Cup Winners’ Cup. After spells with Reggiana and Atlético Mineiro, he joined Galatasaray in 1998. In Istanbul, he became part of Fatih Terim’s team that won the 2000 UEFA Cup, the first European trophy claimed by a Turkish club. In the final against Arsenal, Taffarel saved Patrick Vieira’s and David Batty’s penalties as Galatasaray won. The club then defeated Real Madrid 2–1 after extra time in the 2000 UEFA Super Cup, adding another continental honour. Taffarel returned to Parma in 2001 and ended his playing career in 2003. At Galatasaray, his domestic honours also included three consecutive Turkish league titles from 1999 through 2001, plus Turkish Cups in 1999 and 2000. His later coaching work included Brazil’s national team and Liverpool, where he has worked alongside compatriot Alisson Becker since 2021 as goalkeeping coach.
