Callum Turner is an English actor whose work spans historical drama, thrillers, comedy and large-scale film franchises. Born in London in 1990, he began his screen career with television roles before taking the lead in John Boorman’s *Queen and Country* (2014). Turner plays Bill Rohan, a young man called up for British national service during the Korean War. The film follows Boorman’s *Hope and Glory* and draws on the director’s experiences as a young man. Its focus on army training, friendship and life in postwar Britain gave Turner an early role built around a specific historical moment.
He appeared in the 2016 crime romance *Tramps*, directed by Adam Leon. Turner plays Danny, whose involvement in a botched handoff brings him together with Ellie, played by Grace Van Patten. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival before reaching Netflix. In a different kind of production, Turner joined the *Fantastic Beasts* series as Theseus Scamander, the older brother of Eddie Redmayne’s Newt Scamander. Theseus is a British Auror, and Turner played him in both *The Crimes of Grindelwald* (2018) and *The Secrets of Dumbledore* (2022).
On television, Turner led the first series of the BBC thriller *The Capture* in 2019. His character, former soldier Shaun Emery, becomes the focus of a murder investigation after troubling surveillance footage emerges. The story’s questions about manipulated images and the reliability of video evidence are central to Emery’s predicament. Turner also played Frank Churchill in Autumn de Wilde’s 2020 adaptation of Jane Austen’s *Emma.*, appearing alongside Anya Taylor-Joy. Frank’s charm and concealed engagement make him an important source of misunderstanding in the story.
Turner portrayed Joe Rantz in *The Boys in the Boat* (2023), George Clooney’s film about the University of Washington rowing crew that competed at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Rantz’s difficult circumstances and determination are central to the film’s account of the team. In the 2024 Apple TV+ miniseries *Masters of the Air*, Turner played Major John “Bucky” Egan of the United States Army Air Forces’ 100th Bomb Group. The series follows American airmen flying dangerous bombing missions over Europe during the Second World War. Turner’s Egan has a close friendship with Major Gale “Buck” Cleven, played by Austin Butler. Together, those roles show how much of Turner’s work has involved portraying people caught up in particular events, from national service in the 1950s to aerial combat in wartime Europe.
