Brendan Fraser

Brendan Fraser was born on December 3, 1968, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Canadian parents. Because his father worked in foreign service, Fraser spent parts of his childhood in several places, including Canada, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. He studied at Upper Canada College in Toronto and later graduated from Seattle’s Cornish College of the Arts in 1990. Soon afterward, he moved into acting, appearing in the 1991 film Dogfight and gaining early attention in Encino Man, in which he played a frozen prehistoric man discovered in modern California.

Fraser became a recognizable leading actor during the 1990s. He played a young man navigating romantic and social complications in School Ties, alongside Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Chris O’Donnell. He also appeared in Gods and Monsters, a 1998 drama about filmmaker James Whale, although Ian McKellen played Whale himself. Fraser’s role as Clayton in Disney’s 1999 animated film Tarzan was especially notable because he supplied the character’s speaking voice, while Tony Goldwyn performed Tarzan’s singing voice.

His international breakthrough came with The Mummy in 1999, directed by Stephen Sommers. Fraser portrayed adventurer and former soldier Rick O’Connell opposite Rachel Weisz’s Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan. The film’s commercial success produced The Mummy Returns in 2001 and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in 2008, though Weisz did not return for the third installment. Fraser also starred in Journey to the Center of the Earth, a 2008 adventure film released in 3-D, and its 2010 sequel, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.

During the 2000s and 2010s, Fraser worked in both mainstream and dramatic projects, including Gods and Monsters, Bedazzled, Crash, and Inkheart. He later took substantial television roles in series such as The Affair, Trust, and Doom Patrol, where he voiced and physically portrayed Cliff Steele, also known as Robotman.

A major career revival followed his performance in Darren Aronofsky’s 2022 film The Whale. Fraser played Charlie, an isolated English teacher living with severe obesity who attempts to reconnect with his estranged daughter. His performance earned the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2023. He also appeared in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon as lawyer W. S. Hamilton. Fraser’s filmography therefore spans broad adventure, animation, television, and demanding dramatic work, with The Whale marking a particularly significant return to prominent leading roles.
