Ayumu Watanabe

Ayumu Watanabe is a Japanese animation director whose career has moved between long-running family franchises, manga adaptations, and more visually experimental features. Born September 3, 1966, he joined Shin-Ei Animation in 1986. At that studio he worked on the Doraemon television series and developed an association with the character that led to several theatrical assignments. Watanabe directed *Doraemon: Nobita’s Dinosaur 2006*, a remake of the 1980 Doraemon film *Nobita’s Dinosaur*. The story sends Nobita and his friends into a conflict over a baby plesiosaur named Piisuke. He later directed *Doraemon: Nobita’s Great Battle of the Mermaid King*, released in 2010. These films place him within one of Japanese animation’s most durable screen series, rather than merely treating Doraemon as a passing credit. In 2012, Watanabe directed the television adaptation of *Space Brothers*, based on Chūya Koyama’s manga. Its central premise follows brothers Mutta and Hibito Nanba, whose childhood promise to go to the Moon is tested as one works toward astronaut selection and the other flies in space. The series ran for 99 episodes, making it a substantial television project in his filmography. Watanabe directed the 2019 feature *Children of the Sea*, produced by Studio 4°C and adapted from Daisuke Igarashi’s manga. The film centers on Ruka, a middle-school girl who encounters Umi and Sora, two boys raised at sea, while strange marine phenomena unfold around them. Joe Hisaishi composed its music, and the production’s hand-drawn sea imagery made the feature a conspicuous departure from the simpler graphic language associated with Doraemon. He also directed *After the Rain* (2018), a television adaptation of Jun Mayuzuki’s manga. It concerns Akira Tachibana, a high-school track runner sidelined by injury, and her feelings for Masami Kondō, the manager of the restaurant where she works. In 2021, he served as chief director of *Komi Can’t Communicate*, based on Tomohito Oda’s manga about Shoko Komi and her extreme difficulty communicating with classmates. He followed that with *Summer Time Rendering* in 2022, adapting Yasuki Tanaka’s manga about Shinpei Ajiro’s return to Wakayama’s Hitogashima island after Ushio Kofune’s death and a repeating chain of events. Watanabe has thus directed works aimed at markedly different audiences, from Doraemon’s child-centered adventures to romances and suspense narratives. The recurring evidence of his career is not a single house style but his documented stewardship of particular adaptations and franchise installments. Those credits, rather than broad labels, define his identifiable place in animation.
