André Catimba

Brazilian centre-forward André Catimba occupies a singular place in Grêmio’s history because of one match and one goal: the 1977 Campeonato Gaúcho decider against Internacional. On 25 September 1977, at the Olímpico Monumental, Catimba scored the only goal in Grêmio’s 1–0 victory. The result gave Grêmio the state championship and stopped Internacional’s sequence of eight consecutive Campeonato Gaúcho titles, won from 1969 through 1976. For that reason, the striker’s name remains attached to one of the defining victories in the Porto Alegre derby, rather than merely to a statistical entry in a season record. The championship carried an unusually sharp symbolic weight in Rio Grande do Sul. Grêmio’s previous state title had come in 1968, and Internacional had controlled every edition between 1969 and 1976. Thus the 1977 final was not simply a match for another trophy. Catimba’s finish ended an established local order and returned the Campeonato Gaúcho to Grêmio after nine years without the club holding it. In accounts of the club’s past, the 1–0 score is consequently often identified with his surname, just as the interrupted eight-title run is central to the match’s meaning. His post-goal celebration is inseparable from the memory of the final. Catimba performed an acrobatic leap near the perimeter of the field and fell into the ditch surrounding the Olímpico pitch. Photographs and film of the episode have helped preserve the moment beyond ordinary match reports: a scorer celebrating a title-clinching derby goal, then disappearing below field level. The fall did not alter the result, but it fixed an additional image in Grêmio folklore. When the 1977 championship is revisited in club media and supporter recollections, the goal and that extravagant celebration are normally recalled together. Catimba’s association with Grêmio did not represent the entirety of his football career. He also played for Palmeiras, but his spell in Porto Alegre supplied the episode by which he is most broadly remembered. The distinction matters when reading his career: he was not a symbolic figure created after retirement, but an active forward whose decisive intervention occurred in a competitive final with a concrete consequence. His 25 September goal settled the derby, ended Internacional’s run, and delivered Grêmio’s first Campeonato Gaúcho crown since 1968.
