Olivia Rodrigo emerged as a major pop songwriter through two sharply different beginnings: Disney acting and intimate diary-like music. Born in Murrieta, California, in 2003, she began acting on Disney Channel's Bizaardvark in 2016, then played Nini Salazar-Roberts in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, which premiered on Disney+ in 2019. That role connected her to Joshua Bassett and Sabrina Carpenter, while the show's songs gave Rodrigo early experience performing for a large streaming audience. Her breakthrough arrived in January 2021, when Geffen Records released “drivers license,” a piano-led single written with Dan Nigro. It debuted at number one on Billboard's Hot 100, broke Spotify records for opening-day global streams, and became the first song to reach 80 million Spotify streams in a week. Its dramatic vocal performance and lyrics about teenage heartbreak made Rodrigo an international star before her debut album appeared. Sour, released May 21, 2021, expanded that emotional world across eleven tracks, including “deja vu,” “good 4 u,” “traitor,” and “brutal.” Produced mainly by Nigro, Sour moved between acoustic ballads, alternative-rock guitars, and pop-punk energy, turning specific adolescent anxieties into unusually detailed songs. The album debuted at number one in the United States and won three Grammy Awards in 2022: Best New Artist, Best Pop Vocal Album, and Best Pop Solo Performance for “drivers license.” Rodrigo also made history as the youngest artist nominated across all four major Grammy categories at that ceremony. In 2022, she headlined the Sour Tour, beginning with smaller venues before moving into theaters and arenas; the concert film Olivia Rodrigo: The Sour Tour, released on Netflix in October 2023, documented the show. Her second album, Guts, arrived in September 2023, again produced with Nigro and led by “vampire,” “bad idea right?” and “get him back!” Whereas Sour often centered first heartbreak, Guts examined self-doubt, anger, ambition, and the awkwardness of becoming an adult under intense public attention. “Vampire” became Rodrigo's third Hot 100 number-one single, following “drivers license” and “good 4 u.” Guts earned six Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year for “vampire.” The deluxe edition, Guts (Spilled), added five songs in 2024, including “so american,” which she wrote after beginning a relationship with actor Louis Partridge.
