Megan Thee Stallion, born Megan Jovon Ruth Pete on February 15, 1995, in San Antonio, Texas, was raised in Houston, where her mother, Holly Thomas, performed rap under the name Holly-Wood. Megan began releasing freestyles online while studying health administration at Texas Southern University. Her cyphers, especially those filmed at Houston’s “H-Town” rap battles, drew attention for their sharp punch lines and controlled delivery.
She released the mixtape Rich Ratchet in 2016 and followed it with Make It Hot in 2017. Her 2018 project Tina Snow introduced the confident persona named after Pimp C’s Tony Snow alter ego. The project’s single “Big Ole Freak” became her first Billboard Hot 100 entry, reaching number 65 after she signed with 300 Entertainment. In 2019, Fever established her nationally as a solo artist, while “Hot Girl Summer,” featuring Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign, turned a phrase from Megan’s fan culture into a major pop-culture slogan.
Her 2020 EP Suga included “Savage,” whose remix with Beyoncé reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. That same year, Megan joined Cardi B on “WAP,” another number-one single, and released the album Good News. At the 63rd Grammy Awards in 2021, “Savage Remix” won Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song, making Megan one of the ceremony’s most decorated rap winners that night. She also earned recognition for her socially direct performance of “Body” and for speaking publicly about violence against women.
Megan released Traumazine in 2022, an album that balanced hard-edged tracks with more vulnerable material. In January 2024, “Hiss” became her first solo single to reach number one on the Hot 100; its pointed lyrics generated widespread discussion, particularly around a reference commonly interpreted as involving Nicki Minaj’s husband. Her third studio album, Megan, arrived in June 2024 and included “Hiss,” “Cobra,” and “Boa.” The record presented a self-directed reset after her departure from longtime label 1501 Certified Entertainment and her later partnership with Warner Music Group. Megan has also maintained her connection to education: she graduated from Texas Southern University in 2021. Across her catalog, Houston identity, technical rapping, sexual self-possession, and personal resilience remain recurring elements, but her career is defined most concretely by chart-topping collaborations, multiple Grammy wins, and a steady expansion from regional freestyle phenomenon to internationally recognized recording artist.
