Britney Spears was born on December 2, 1981, in McComb, Mississippi, and raised in Kentwood, Louisiana. As a child, she appeared on Star Search and joined The All-New Mickey Mouse Club in 1993, alongside future pop performers Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Ryan Gosling, and JC Chasez. After recording demos in New York and working with producer Max Martin in Sweden, she released her debut single, “…Baby One More Time,” in 1998. The song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and its school-uniform video became a defining late-1990s pop image. Her 1999 album of the same name topped the Billboard 200 and established her as a major international teen-pop artist.

Spears followed it with Oops!... I Did It Again (2000), whose title track became another signature hit. Britney (2001) included “I’m a Slave 4 U,” marking a more adult musical and visual direction; its MTV Video Music Awards performance featured a live python. In 2003, she released In the Zone, led by “Me Against the Music,” with Madonna, and “Toxic.” “Toxic” won Spears her first Grammy Award, for Best Dance Recording, in 2005. Her collaborations and singles also included “Scream & Shout” with will.i.am, which reached number one in several countries, and “Hold Me Closer,” a 2022 duet with Elton John.

Her discography reflects shifts from tightly constructed pop to club-oriented and electronic production. Blackout (2007), featuring “Gimme More” and “Piece of Me,” was later ranked by Rolling Stone among its 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Circus (2008) debuted at number one in the United States and produced “Womanizer,” her second Hot 100 chart-topper. Femme Fatale (2011) yielded the number-one single “Hold It Against Me.” From 2013 through 2017, Spears headlined Britney: Piece of Me, a Las Vegas residency at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.

In 2008, a Los Angeles court placed Spears under a conservatorship, initially involving her father, Jamie Spears, and attorney Andrew Wallet. The arrangement became the focus of the FreeBritney movement and extensive public scrutiny. On November 12, 2021, Judge Brenda Penny terminated the conservatorship in Los Angeles County Superior Court. Spears later addressed her life and career in the memoir The Woman in Me, published in 2023. The book became a bestseller and presented her account of fame, family conflict, and the conservatorship. In 2024, Spears wrote on Instagram that she would never return to the music industry, challenging reports of a new album.
