Vivarium

Vivarium is a 2019 science-fiction thriller directed by Irish filmmaker Lorcan Finnegan and written by Garret Shanley. It stars Imogen Poots as Gemma and Jesse Eisenberg as Tom, a young couple looking for their first home. The film premiered in the Critics’ Week section at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, where its unnerving suburban premise was introduced to international audiences.

The story begins when Gemma, a kindergarten teacher, and Tom, a landscaper, visit a real-estate office. Their peculiar agent, Martin, played by Jonathan Aris, drives them to Yonder, a development of identical mint-green houses arranged beneath an artificial-looking sky. After Martin abruptly disappears, Gemma and Tom discover that every road returns them to house number 9. Their car runs out of fuel, and even burning the house fails to free them.

Soon, a box arrives with food and the instruction, “Raise the child and be released.” Inside is a baby boy who grows at an impossible rate. The child becomes a demanding, unsettling presence whose high-pitched cries and mimicry of adult voices intensify the couple’s confinement. Tom becomes obsessed with digging a large hole in the garden, while Gemma attempts to understand the boy and the system that controls Yonder.

Finnegan uses the estate’s repeating architecture and vivid artificial color palette to turn the promise of homeownership into a nightmare. Rather than locating its horror in a conventional monster, Vivarium focuses on forced domesticity, surveillance, and the erosion of Gemma and Tom’s relationship. The title refers to an enclosed habitat designed for observing living organisms, an idea reflected by Yonder’s controlled environment.

The production reunited Finnegan and Shanley after their feature Without Name, released in 2016. Vivarium was produced by Fantastic Films and Frakas Productions, with support from Irish and Belgian partners. Its supporting cast includes Senan Jennings as the Boy and Jonathan Aris as Martin, the agent whose strained smile and rehearsed sales language signal that Yonder is not an ordinary housing project.

As time passes, the Boy adopts Martin’s mannerisms, and Gemma follows him through the estate in search of an explanation. The film’s final movement reveals that Yonder is part of a broader cycle, while Tom and Gemma confront the cost of their captivity. Vivarium received a United States release on March 27, 2020, by Saban Films. Critics noted its deliberately repetitive design and the committed performances of Poots and Eisenberg as trapped suburban parents throughout the film.
